    3. Hello Joan Don't know if it will answer your specific query, but there is a very useful site at www.rogerco.freeserve.co.uk which is about Victorian and Edwardian photography, with heaps of information and a useful links page. Also, have you tried typing something like 'Victorian photographic studio' into Google? You get lots of fascinating stuff. Good luck ! Liz

    3. Thanks to all who replied. All replies were direct, so for those that didn't get to read it: No, burial details are not included on the death certificate because the death certificate is required to authorise the burial. Australian death certificates are a mini-biography (if the informant is reliable) and include the burial details, that's why I thought the UK certificates might too. This reminds me of a funny story: About 8 yrs ago when I was in England on holidays, I saw a guidebook about Australia and read the first paragraph out of curiosity to find out what other people think of us. It read: "Everything in Australia is backwards - even the trees which don't shed their leaves, they shed their bark!" Its true, they do, and until that point, I had never considered it weird. Sandra

    3. Hi Joan, The only suggestion I have is to try http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp. E.g. a search for "photographer" in Kelly's Directory of Worcestershire, 1892 produces 22 hits - but none are the names you mention. Try other years close to the time you believe the photos were taken. 1. Burial location
    2. Sandra Lewis
    3. Can someone tell me if the burial location is listed on UK death certificates? The time period I'm enquiring about is 1871. The registration district is Hereford, so plenty of possibilities and its likely to get expensive if searching one-by-one. I hope that if I can find the burial of the husband (a "rare" name), I'll find the wife (much more common name). They are not in the HFHS Monumental Inscription Index, but there are some very likely relatives to pursue. If this doesn't work, is there another way to find deaths for those with common names? - other than matching ages which are sometimes way off. Thanks Sandra

    2. I am looking for Charles and Caroline Vaughan who were in Radnorshire in 1851 but no longer appearing in 1861 although their 13 year old daughter showed as a servant in someone else's household in Talgarth. Since Charles' wife was from Hereford I am wondering if they may have gone there and might show up in 1861. If anyone would be willing to check I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Kathy

    3. No, the burial location is not given because the death certificate has to be issued before a burial or cremation can be arranged. Burials have to be checked out with church or crematoria records. ======================================== Message Received: Jun 11 2006, 09:23 AM From: "Sandra Lewis" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Cc: Subject: [HEF] Burial location Can someone tell me if the burial location is listed on UK death certificates? 1. Thanks--finding places on maps
    2. Ruth Ann Baker
    3. Thanks to John Ball, Neal Bright, Liz (Summerson Family), Tina Morgan, and David Pearsall for their replies. Now I know that the spelling of birthplace for the Caroline Meredith that married Charles Bufton is LLANWARNE, not Llwarne as on census or other misspellings. Missing the two needed letters made it impossible to find on maps. Does this have to do in part with the Welsh way of pronouncing this place name? Also in answers found that this Caroline Meredith is NOT the one I am looking for. Thanks for the suggestions of places to look for maps in addition to multi map site. Here again, one simple punctuation mark led me to the wrong place. Instead of http://www.old-maps.co.uk I went to http://www.oldmaps.co.uk and got the message below. This is why I said it was no longer available. Going to the first (and correct) one tonight, I did find LLANWARNE with no trouble. Now I just have to get acquainted with it better to know how to use the various features. Ruth Ann Baker message from second site above (the wrong one) "ATTENTION ! This web site is..... defunct ! - due to a steady stream of enquiries for old maps rather than some of the reproduction maps my client supplies he has decided to withdraw his web site..."

    3. Have a look at the GENUKI Herefordshire site for Towns and Parishes. Ocle Pychard is the normal spelling for this little village, rather than Pitchard. Roughly between Hereford and Bromyard. The mysterious L place is almost certainly Llanwarne, in my view - a small village between Hereford and Ross and where, as it happens, I grew up. Clodock is right next to Longtown, the Herefordshire side of the Black Mountains. You should find Longtown on a site like Multimap. Llangattock in Breconshire is on the Brecon and Monmouth canal route - not difficult to find, 10 or ll miles south-east of Brecon. All of these places can be found on the appropriate county page of www.genuki.org.uk Liz

    3. A special thanks to Kathy Nemaric, C Beatie, and Patti Dyer for their replies about Henry MEREDITH. It now looks like: 1. He was born about 1819 in Clodock, Herefordshire and was one of three children in the family christened/baptized there in 1825. 2. He was a teenager at Clyro, Radnorshire with his parents when 1841 census was taken. 3. He married the first time before 1851 according to 1851 census for Liverpool (taken in March). 4. Left for America, arriving in April 1851. 5. Was on 1860 census in California, U.S.A. 6. Had children born in California (maybe 1855, 1862, etc.) with a wife named Margaret. 7. Returned to Great Britain by 1869 when he married Anne Hamer in Hay, Breconshire. 8. By 1873 he was in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, according to 1881 census record. 9. Probably died in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire 1894. With their additional clues, I hope to now be able to find him on the 1871 and 1891 census records next week when the local Family History is open again. Thanks so much for your help and suggestions. 3. In following some of MEREDITH ancestors have come across some places that cannot be found on multi map site, plus the old maps site is no longer available. Do you know where these are? Are they a place like a town and village or a property like a house and farm? How do I locate these places? Caroline BUFTON (Trying to determine if she is the Caroline Pitt MEREDITH christened/baptized in 1833 at Hay, Breconshire) Handwriting on first two of these quite hard to read! --on 1861 census for Ocle Pitchard, Herefordshire her birthplace indexed as Llannorne, Herefordshire (RG9/1828, folio 134, page 4, household 12) --on 1871 census for Ocle Pitchard, Herefordshire her birthplace is indexed as Lenwown, Hertfordshire (looks like Herefordshire to me) (RG 10/2711, folio 45, page 1, household 4) --on 1881 census for Ocle Pitchard, Herefordshire her birthplace indexed as Llwarne, Herefordshire (writing very clearly says this) (RG11/2602, folio 125, page 3, household 10) Thomas MEREDITH (believe him to be Thomas John Meredith, christened/baptized 1828 in Clodock, Herefordshire and may have died in 1879 in Abergavenny area of Monmouthshire) --on 1861 census for Llangattock, Breconshire his birthplace indexed as Llanvens, Herefordshire (RG9/4217, household 162) --on 1871 census for Llangattock, Breconshire his birthplace indexed as Cluddock, Herefordshire Ruth Ann Baker United States

    3. Hello Ruth Ann Baker, After checking through my resources, the only thing I can try to help you with is the 1841 Radnorshire census. If you are sure you have the correct family on their, then as you will see,Henry was 16 in 1841. Hundred of Llanbedr Painscastle,Clyro Parish.HO 107:1456:ED 1 & 2 James MEREDITH,55,Yeoman,No ( not born in County ),residence Paradise, folio f8 page 8 Elizabeth ,50,No David ,20,Ag Lab,No Henry ,16,Ag Lab,No Hannah ,15,F.S.,No As you may have noticed James had the title of a "Yeoman" which you can find out the meaning of.Also none of the above were born in Radnorshire so maybe Herefordshire and the Cusop or Clodock area of Longtown is worth investigating? Best Wishes, Malcolm

    3. Hello to Liz, There was and guess still is, nothing reasonably unusual about this name, at least round the Shropshire/Herefordshire/Radnorshire corner. What makes them so difficult is the variety of spellings for the name, held me up considerably. Jo. Shropshire.
