Hi: I've just joined this list. After five years of searching, I finally confirmed my great, great, great grandmother was Ann MORRIS, born to WIlliam and Ann MORRIS in 1796 in Hope under Dinmore. An IGI extraction notes her christening on 4 September 1796. She married Edward Powell (second wife) of Culmington on 5 August 1833 in St. Chad in Shrewbury. Edward was a farm labourer all his life and except for this one excursion seems to have lived in Culmington from birth until death in 1876. Ann died in Stoke St. Millborough in 1881. I cannot find a marriage for William and Ann Morris, nor can I find any other children born to them in Hope under Dinmore, so in a vain straw-clutching effort, I'm wondering if anyone has any connections with this family and if so, could they please get in touch. Thanks Adrian Winnipeg, Canada
Hi All Please note that I am moving house this month (at last!). As I am moving out of my present house, Medwam at Edwyn Ralph on Saturday 15th July and moving into my new house at Ledbury on Wednesday 26th July, there maybe a slight delay in dealing with things while I am "homeless"! My email address and mobile phone number will still find me. For my new address and further details please look at: http://local.live.com/?v=2&cid=E61D7E7628050CD6!106 My apologies if you get more than one copy of this, my address book leaves much to be desired....:-) Polly Rubery List admin: [email protected] A genealogy and local history list covering the Counties of Brecon, Hereford, Monmouth, Shropshire, Stafford and Worcester. Hi Vivian, I got this: "An index to Probate Records 1700-1858 has been compiled by Eleanor Harris. This index is not online, but is searchable for a fee - details on Eleanor's page on Herefordshire Family History Research" from this page http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/ProbateRecords/about.html This is the link to Eleanor's page http://homepages.which.net/~eleanor.harris/ which contains an email address. I don't know if its current. If you click on the wills link, there is also a postal address. I hope this is helpful Sandra -----Original Message----- From: Jim and Vivian [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 3 July 2006 5:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [HEF] Herefordshire Probate Index Speaking of wills - please tell me about the Herefordshire Probate Index, an index of 42,000 wills. Hi all you n'th cousins many times removed :o) Charts are handy, but you can work it out anyway from closest relationship: Same parents - siblings Same grandparents - cousins Same great-grandparents - 2nd cousins Same great-great-grandparents - 3rd cousins and so on - the number of g's gives the cousin number, too easy. Then from the closest relationship, moving up or down the tree one level is one remove. eg. you and your grandmother's 3rd cousin are 3rd cousins twice removed. So to answer the question, your cousin 3 times removed is your great-grandmother's or great-grandfather's cousin - or far in the future, your great-granddaughter's or great-grandson's cousin. Remember removal works up or down the tree. These are mathematically exact relationships, eternal rather than old-fashioned. They're here to stay, as long as we're interested in family and who we are. Eschew fashion and stick with the maths! But it does get more complicated when you find a double half 2nd cousin three times removed, I suppose... Steve in Oz (lucky enough to make contact with 5th cousin Alison back in England, same g4-grandparents!) * "double" happens a few different ways, usually from cousins of some degree marrying, so you have the same ancestors on different branches (eg. I'm twice descended from Samuel & Elizabeth BAYNHAM of Yazor HEF, through a 2nd cousin marriage, so I'm doubly related to similar descendents). Also, double cousins happen where bro & sis marry sis & bro or similar - I have quite a few double 2nd cousins here in Oz from just this occurrence with my great-grands, and many more distant doubles - lots of multiple marriages between familes in old New South Wales & Moreton Bay which had small populations mid 1800's. * "half" we all know about from multiple marriages, but it can get complicated - my favourite 1st cousin once removed, Lenore (my Dad's cousin, and curator of the family museum) has a half-brother who is also her 2nd cousin once removed - their's mother's husbands were 1st cousins once removed - simple, no? :o) PS I find it convenient in long emails to use shorthand eg. 2nd cousin 3 times removed is "2c3r" - too obscure, or is it obvious? PPS Anyone keen enough to read this far, are you familiar with the old blues "The Dirty Dozens"? The best insult from these was "your Poppa is your cousin" - I finally figured out the only way this can happen - think about it! Thank you Annette and Alex, Annette thank you for your offer, basically I have been trying to find who were the residents at Berrington Hall circa 1900 to 1920.I have bought some basic information on the Hall but this does not divulge anything. Alex may I ask does the Burial index you are working on cover the 1930's to 1940's please? Thank you both, Malcolm
Malcolm, Your grandmother would not have had the vote before she married, so she would not presumably be on the electoral registers. To me you seem to have done the sensibly obvious things. This is the frustrating side of family history! Good luck, Alec Whitfield from North Herefordshire UK [email protected] You wrote: My Grandmother Lily Louisa MELLINGS born 14th August 1889 at Broome near Hopesay Shropshire, was a Servant and then became a Ladies Maid at Berrington Hall.A tale existed in the family that an exiled related member of the Russian Royal Family was living their and my Mother had this Lady as a Godmother and her name of Nina from her.We did have a silver Christening cup with her initials on it at one time.No substantiating evidence for the Lady has been found. We believe their was also a residence in the Tenbury Wells area involved and also possibly Croft Castle which I have also visited. Subsequently at a Family History Fair,I had the suggestion made to me by Hereford Record Office that the only other course of action was to check the Electoral Rolls for Berrington Hall for this period but I wonder if my Grandmother would have been too young to appear on these? Hi All, I am new to this mailing list, and wish to make an inquiry regarding Berrington Hall in Leominster. I have recently received information related to a distant relation's possible employment in a servant position at Berrington Hall- Leominster in the period 1850-1910. I am wondering whether someone on the mailing list can advise me with regard to finding the census information on the estate's staff. I am uncertain as to what parish this estate was listed under? My distant aunt's surname was either Bristow or Vincent, however I would like to find the names of all the servants listed on the census', in case any other name sounds familiar. According to the Berrington Hall website, apparently there were only a limited number of servants listed in the 1861/71/81/91 census records. There were also some suggestions that this woman subsequently married a Lord Rodney, following the death of his 2nd wife, however I do not have any factual information at this time. Any information would be appreciated. Thanking you in advance. Lynn Miller Belleville Ontario Canada
Hi Helen, If you go to the following you can download a chart and explanation of family relationships. Its not a 'title' just a more accurate description of the relationship cousin. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gentutor/chart.html Regards Gerald -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 5:38 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [HEF] Define cousins three times removed Can somebody please define the 'title' my cousin twice removed, or cousin three times removed.
