Mandy, Welcome back. I think I'm right in saying that in 1841 census counties matched the county boundaries. After that they didn't. These are the POWELL in Staunton on Arrow in 1851 and as you will see they are in the Presteigne census district within Radnorshire. I haven't checked if these appear on Ancestry but I suspect not, and if not, then it will mean looking at the census elsewhere. These don't appear on the S&N 1851 HEF Census CD that I have here. I don't have ready access to the PR's I'm afraid. Hope that helps a little. Firstly, I cannot find Staunton on the 1851 (found it on the 41 no probs but.) I've tried looking under nearby villages of Titley, Marston, Shobdon but none seem to cover Staunton. Did it get missed completely or am I looking in the wrong place altogether? Secondly, I have a lot of Powells born in Staunton on Arrow (yes, I know Powell is like SMITH to the rest of the country) but I wondered if anyone had access to the PRs for Staunton who might be able to help me sort out a few conundrums. Fingers crossed Mandy
Hello Mandy, Staunton on Arrow was an "Ancient Parish" - and was in Kington Registration District. Unfortunately I don't have the 1851 Piece Number readily to hand... I'd also mention that it was divided between Stretford and Wigmore Hundreds, and so is likely to've been listed in 2 places in the 1841. I've found one additional question re Staunton - the village appears on the 1861 census as one page of 13 entries listed as Stanton on Arrow - the page is actually supposed to be a description of the area covered but no such luck. Any suggestions as to where I might find the inhabitants - or not at all? Hello good Listers, On my GGgrandmother's marriage certificate, it is almost certain that the witness is her sister, CHARLOTTE [WICKS/WICKES] WHEELER. Charlotte is the first of the five girls born to Jonathon Somerset Wicks and Margaret Trotman in Tetbury, Gloucester. 1] Charlotte Wicks chr 6 Nov 1799-1888 did she marry John WHEELER in 1828 ? 2] Ann Wicks chr 7 Nov 1800-1896 Became Mormon, married George Grove Edward TAYLOR. First husband William Black of Ireland. Her husband George committed polygamy when he married Jane Baxter in 1851. Ann & George's son JOSEPH EDWARD TAYLOR became a Patriarch of the Mormon church in Salt Lake in 1904. Many wives & children. All this family ended up in Salt Lake City. 3] Mary Wicks chr 18 Mar 1803 ***my GGgrandmother --died 1845, after fourth birth 4] Margaret Wicks chr 1804-1810 died 6 years old 5] Eliza Wicks chr 17 Dec 1806-1843 did she marry a James Hodges in London ? As interesting as Ann Wicks Taylor is, it is CHARLOTTE WHEELER I am interested in at the moment. Can anyone see where she is in any census? In 1881 census, she is living at Hardwick Cottage No. 1 in CLIFFORD, Hereford --an 80 year old annuitant widow. A lodger organist is boarding. Just two houses away from the schoolhouse, and close to the Friary. Strangely, Charlotte's sister Mary who died in 1845 had married the schoolmaster of Clifford in 1838. JOSEPH ALLBUT left Clifford in the mid 1850s. I wonder why Charlotte is still there? So between 1838 and 1881 I know nothing about Charlotte Wicks Wheeler. Can anyone fill in the blank ?? Any thoughts much appreciated. Regards, Kitty PS. The name 'Allbut' is almost always mistranscribed. Sometimes 'Allbert'.

Hi All We have not yet migrated - Rootsweb have announced that: <quote> Most of you by now are familiar (or have heard of) the mail delivery problem with AOL. We are doing everything we can to work with AOL so list mail will be delivered normally again. In the meantime, in order to minimize the effect on AOL subscribers the migration of mailing lists D-Z has been delayed until the problem can be resolved. The list update schedule page has been updated to reflect the delay in migration: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html When the AOL issues have been resolved, we will update the list update schedule page to reflect the new migration dates for each alphabet group. Announcements will also be posted to these lists and on the RootsWeb help page to notify you that the updates will resume. <end quote> Regards Polly Rubery List admin: [email protected] A genealogy and local history list covering the Counties of Brecon, Hereford, Monmouth, Shropshire, Stafford and Worcester. Hi All Today is the day set for the migration of this List from the old SmartList software to new (to Rootsweb Lists) Mailman software. So far this has not happened, but then they are a few hours behind us in the USA! Luckily some of the ensuing problems have been ironed out by Lists starting with A-C, but there will invariably be some differences that you will all see when it does happen. Most of you should have received a notification from Rootsweb, but in case any (especially recent new subscribers) have missed it I will repeat it below. PLEASE read it and take note of the changes to the List addresses. Please also note that if any of you are subscribed to both List and Digest formats with the same email address you will cease to receive the Digest as both cannot be sent to the same address. If you still wish to receive both formats then you will need to subscribe to the Digest with a different email address. Those subscribed to the Digest format will start to receive them in the default form of plain text, ie as one long continuos message. If you prefer the MIME format, where each message is a separate attachment then *I* CAN set you up to receive it in that format, but you will have to write and ask me, and tell me your email address (and also be patient, as if I receive a lot of requests it may take me some time to work through them - as I also have to learn to use the new admin interface!) At the moment AOL have blacklisted the new Rootsweb servers, so AOL subscribers may lose touch.....hopefully this problem will be sorted out shortly. Any other problems, please contact me and I will try to help. Kind regards Polly Rubery List admin: [email protected] A genealogy and local history list covering the Counties of Brecon, Hereford, Monmouth, Shropshire, Stafford and Worcester. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- [email protected] vs. the current [email protected] You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "[email protected]" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to [email protected] Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to [email protected] or [email protected] as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to [email protected] The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.
Hello List Have joined in case someone can help me. I would like to find the ancestors of Mary Ann Jones (yes, I know, common name!) - details below 1841 Mary Ann, 6, living in Michaelchurch Escley with mother Elizabeth and siblings. 1851 Not found - possible a servant 1861 Mary Ann Jones living in Michaelchurch Escley, age 30, single, with daughter Elizabeth, 2 (named after her mother?) Later in 1861 she married Henry Hall in Michaelchurch Escley, father given as John Jones Farmer, Witnesses James Jones (relation?) and Mary Ann Pritchard (Innkeeper's wife, living next to Mary in the 1861 census). In 1862 they had a daughter Sarah, and in 1867 a son James. Mary seems to have died in the same year as James was born. I have tried to find Elizabeth, her daughter b 1859 and also tried to find an appropriate James Jones, and found the following - James Jones 83, b Madley, his wife Sarah 78, b Much Marcle and Elizabeth, granddaughter 12, born Tupsley, all living in Tupsley. Did Mary name her later children after this James and Sarah? Her father John cannot be found. Sorry, this is so long - you have probably given up by now. Any ideas gratefully received. Joyce Weeks
I have found a member's submission on the IGI site for a marriage of my 3x great grandfather. If anyone has the PR's for the period 17th June 1830 in LEA would you be kind enough to confirm the marriage and date and details for me please!!! WILLIAM LAWRENCE AND MARY MEEK. Thank you Joan
Sophia Davies, my great grandmother, was a 4 year old in Kington workhouse with her 5/6 year old sister, Mary Ann Davies,in 1861. They were not in the workhouse in 1871 but probably in domestic service. On leaving there they both took their father's surname, Heritage. Both were born in Garnfach, Monmouthshire, not far from Brynmawr which was then in Breconshire. Can anyone please tell me the whereabouts of these girls in 1871? By 1881 Sophia was in Abergavenny, unmarried. Mary Ann was married to George Russell and living in Pershore, Worcestershire with an illegitimate daughter Elizabeth Ann Heritage, Marion Lambert born in Kington around 1868 ,and a son John Russell aged 2. Any help gratefully received.
An idea for Angela: Freebmd gives death for person Harriet Maddy in March quarter of 1839, at Hay. No age stated in the early indexes. Jo.

Stephen, Try www.multimap.co.uk and pop Ridge Hill in the search box. It returns Ridge Hill, an area just above callow. Have a play with the zoom facility for this area which should reveal 'Norton Brook'. Referring back to the 1901 census Mary Bishop's entry appears to read Nerton Brook... bet it should read Norton David Meredith Nottingham > What parish these are in and where they are? > Mary Bishop wife age 29 born Nestor Brook Hereford > Arvey Holmes son age 4 born Ridge hill do
