    3. Hi! I have peroblem with a will of 1750. There is a reference to a street in Presteigne. The word 'Street' is clear enough but the actual name is unclear. It is short, probably four letters. The only possible on the web Multimap is 'High Street'. However the last letter has a curved descender and so is 'g' or less probably 'y'. The penultimate letter is a small circle and so 'a', 'e' or 'o'. Any suggestions are very welcome. I can then see if there is a fit with the remains of the first letter or two. 2. Fiona Banford
    3. Hi I'm new to the list and my main surname interest is BANFORD. The BANFORD's originated in Mathon then moved to Pencombe. Samuel BANFORD b.1788 Mathon, d.1853 Pencombe? he was a carpenter and Wheelwright and is mentioned in the various directories. His two sons Thomas BANFORD b.1819 Pencombe and John BANFORD b.1825 Pencombe took over the wheelwrights business in Pencombe. The family lived at Court Farm, Pencombe and then at Bank House Pencombe. Apparently Court Farm was rebuilt in 1863. Is anyone aware of any old photos/images of the farm? Any information on the Banford's would be welcome. Thanks Fiona

    1. John VERRY Horse thief
    2. maggie and adrian
    3. I have this reference - "Hereford Journal" 31 October 1776 - "Saturday last committed to the county gaol by the Rev.Dr.Woodcock, John VERRY, charged on the oath of Arnold Barrell with stealing a bay gelding, the property of Sir John Cotterell". The representative of the Cotterell family advised me years ago that the offense probably took place in Mansell Gamage. Many years ago I was advised by a London search agent that the Oxford Assize records were destroyed. But I wonder if any folks on this list may know of an alternative source which might identify which parish John was from (there are choices!) - and his ultimate fate. Act books appear to have survived for Gloucester and I'm wondering if those for Hereford have too. Adrian Verry

    1. Phil Gwilliam ---Thanks
    2. Kathleen Watkins
    3. Hi list, Couple of days ago I put a thank you message on the list telling of the great help Phil Gwilliam had been in finding my CHARLOTTE WHEELER [nee Wicks]. Born abt. 1799 in Tetbury, she seems to have been a lifelong servant to the very interesting family PENOYRE, on the Moor in Clifford. Surprised to find Charlotte had a daughter MARY in 1831 who was a lady's maid until the 'lady', ANNA MARIA N. S. PENOYRE died in HAY, Mar quar. 1874. No death found for Mary. But Charlotte is in the 1881 census as 'annuitant' in Clifford. But my message was returned. Now I wonder if I did not have the new address. Guess I will know if this is returned! Regards to all, Kitty

    3. Thank you to all who replied. I hope that I have thanked all of you individually off List, but please forgive me if I have missed any of you - it is not that you are unappreciated but I was "otherwise occupied" - Thursday and Friday was much taken up with buying a new (to me!) car and selling the old one and then getting my number plate (POL 2Y!) put on the new one..... But back to business. The reason that you could not find the page reference given on Ancestry is that they have made an error in identifying the folio number of the page. They have it as folio 378, although the next image/page is correctly folio 382. I asked for further details of the person, and was told that it was "the very first household in Uffington... She was Sophia M Kirkpatrick, dau-in-law, married, 23, born in all those different spellings." So thanks to identifying the family I have found her marriage on FreeBMD: Marriages Dec 1849 Hatton Sophia Maria Faringdon 6 387 Kirkpatrick James Faringdon 6 387 and her baptism on the FamilySearch IGI: SOPHIA MARIA HATTON Christening: 25 AUG 1827 Weston Under Penyard, Hereford, England Father: LEWIS HATTON Mother: SOPHIA Using the Old Maps reference www.old-maps.co.uk - Pontshill, suggested on the HEF List by Ruth Darwen, I soon discovered that it was in the parish of Weston under Penyard. Scroll north from where the link lands you. So QED! Thannks to all of you for your suggestions. I had come up with Putley and Puddlestone as possibilities, but did not have the local knowledge required to make this correct identification. As Ruth says it is easy to see how "Pontshill" could be written as "Punsel" by someone unfamiliar with the dialect/spelling. Kind regards Polly

    2. Gerald A Cooke
    3. Hello Joan, I have looked on Ancestry and have not been able to find any LAWRENCE or variant in Lea Parish or Lea Bailey (which is nearby to Lea) in 1851. I also looked at the HEF FHS and the GLS FHS transcriptions and this confirms their absence in 1851. I also checked 1841 on Ancestry. Lea is part in HEF and part in GLS. They are not included in the Ancestry transcription and I looked at the original census images on Ancestry and they do not appear to be there. 3. Hi All This is now due to take place on Monday - of course they do not have Bank Holidays in the USA.................:-(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will apend my original message below to remind you about what it means to YOU! If you have not read it PLEASE do so now! Cheers Polly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Polly Rubery" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 10:18 PM Subject: List Migration - IMPORTANT message from List Admin - PLEASE READ! Hi All Today is the day set for the migration of this List from the old SmartList software to new (to Rootsweb Lists) Mailman software. So far this has not happened, but then they are a few hours behind us in the USA! Luckily some of the ensuing problems have been ironed out by Lists starting with A-C, but there will invariably be some differences that you will all see when it does happen. Most of you should have received a notification from Rootsweb, but in case any (especially recent new subscribers) have missed it I will repeat it below. PLEASE read it and take note of the changes to the List addresses. Please also note that if any of you are subscribed to both List and Digest formats with the same email address you will cease to receive the Digest as both cannot be sent to the same address. If you still wish to receive both formats then you will need to subscribe to the Digest with a different email address. Those subscribed to the Digest format will start to receive them in the default form of plain text, ie as one long continuos message. If you prefer the MIME format, where each message is a separate attachment then *I* CAN set you up to receive it in that format, but you will have to write and ask me, and tell me your email address (and also be patient, as if I receive a lot of requests it may take me some time to work through them - as I also have to learn to use the new admin interface!) At the moment AOL have blacklisted the new Rootsweb servers, so AOL subscribers may lose touch.....hopefully this problem will be sorted out shortly. Any other problems, please contact me and I will try to help. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- [email protected] vs. the current [email protected] You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "[email protected]" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to [email protected] Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to [email protected] or [email protected] as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to [email protected] The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.
