There was an article in the Hampshire Historian (some time ago)which described how the "Parish" (I THINK it was Sherborne St John)paid for 25 people to emigrate (to reduce the cost to the parish in the long term presumably)! I believe there is an account of it, by the Vicar, pasted inside the cover of the register. As I recall:_ It was about 1830(which was a bad time for ag labs) The names of those who went were listed, they went to what is now Toronto, but it was called something else then?! They were given about 5 acres of land on arrival, and he reports they were prospering and urging others to join them. I seem to remember the cost to the parish was something like £150.00 for all 25!! Perhaps someone could check the register for the sake of accuracy! I believe this also happened in Berkshire. Elizabeth Adams __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
