Hello All Another mailing list I belong to pointed me in the direction of a site which has searchable images of various commercial directories as follows:- ========================================= WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ This is a most fabulous site, one of the best online resources I have seen for a while. It is a library of historical directories, hosted by the University of Leicester. Drawing on the institutions obvious expertise in putting documents on line the site is marvellously easy to use, if a little slow, perhaps because of its expected market of institutional users. The site contains copies of historical directories from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from all over the UK. What makes this site even more exceptional is the wonderful search mechanism. Type in a name, or a place and it will show you the results. Click on one particular result and the search mechanism will take you to the page, and highlight the entry. If all search mechanism's were this good we would be all saved a lot of effort! A truly fantastic resource that I hope will expand to include more directories in time. ================================================= I have tried this site out by searching for Surnames and also place names with some success discovering the whereabouts of some of my ancestors in the early 1800's The Kingsclere Directory entry for 1844 will be appearing on the web site soon. Hope you all have a happy Christmas and successfull searching in the New Year Regards and Best Wishes Peter Goff Kingsclere, Hampshire, UK www.kingsclere.org.uk All outgoing e-mails are scanned for viruses before despatch.
