Dear Barbara and ALL! I doubt very much that anyone will precisely know why my ancestor, John Vince (c 1808 Kingsclere) left Hampshire for Canada. I am wondering, though, just how many other Hampshire folk were leaving for the colonies, and how these poor labourers found passage money. John Vince married Rachel Clinch at Kingsclere in 1828. They had at least 5 children: James c. Baughurst 1828, George c. Kingsclere 1830, Marianna c. Wootton St. Lawrence 11831, Jane c. Wootton St. Lawrence 1833 and Joseph c. Wootton St. Lawrence 1835. I believe John was a farm labourer. I have found nothing more in England. The next news I have on John is his marriage to Rebecca Miller in Canada in 1848. I know at least 3 of his children from his first marriage also came to Canada. Who paid their way? THANKS!!!! Patricia Earl
It's interesting that three of the children were not born in Kingsclere; perhaps the Kingsclere Parish Officers did not feel obliged to support this family in times of need. It was not unknown for a parish to pay the emigration fares as this could be cheaper than supporting families over a long period of time. -- Best regards, Peter McNulty peter@sparshott.org.uk www.sparshott.org.uk Researching: SPARSHOTT families world-wide ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don and Patricia Earl" <cavecanem@execulink.com> To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-KINGSCLERE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 9:55 PM Subject: Emigration from Hampshire > Dear Barbara and ALL! > I doubt very much that anyone will precisely know why my ancestor, John Vince (c 1808 Kingsclere) left Hampshire for Canada. Hello Patricia, It is possible that they had assisted passage. My James Moon and family came from Burghclere to Australia in 1852 in this way. There were a couple of schemes going at different times during the first half of the 1800's depending on when they went to Canada. Kind Regards, Margaret, N.S.W., Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don and Patricia Earl" <cavecanem@execulink.com> To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-KINGSCLERE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 8:55 AM Subject: Emigration from Hampshire > Dear Barbara and ALL! > I doubt very much that anyone will precisely know why my ancestor, John Vince (c 1808 Kingsclere) left Hampshire for Canada.
