Just a quick look in the parish registers (1844-1899 & 1889-1926) for St. Lawrence, Ecchinswell found the following children of James and _Sophia_ Elliott, labourer of Ecchinswell William born 29 Dec 1855 (margin note) bapt. Feast of Epiphany 1856. Charles bapt. 6 Jun 1858 Mary Ann bapt. 27 Feb 1859 David bapt. 14 Jul 1862 Martha bapt. 11 Oct 1863 Ellen bapt. 18 Mar 1866 also children of James and Alice Elliott, labourer of Ecchinswell Edith bapt. 12 Sep 1875 Frank bapt. 8 Jun 1878 Arthur bapt. 17 Feb 1881 (the following names are written in margin James Elliott, Arthur Jewell, Mary Ann Palmer and Harriet Nightingale, possibly godparents tho' this isn't stated.) the family were living at Rats Cottages, Ecchinswell, James is now a Carter. (This is interesting from a personal point of view because I had relatives living in the Laundry at Rats Cottages 1920-1950ish, there were four cottages here and the Laundry was the northernmost one) George bapt. 30 Nov 1884 - still at Rats Cottages Emily bapt. 6 Apr 1887 -do- Albert bapt. 16 May 1890 -do- Elizabeth bapt. 24 Sep 1893 -do- but back to labouring!! No sign of the James Elliott born ca 1868 in your list but maybe it was a second name not used at baptism but may be on the civil birth certificate. St. Lawrence Burial Registers (1844-1955) give Ellen Elliot of Sidmonton buried 4 Dec 1849 age 8 years (probably a dau of William & Ann) Ellen Elliot of Sidmonton buried 21 Apr 1861 age 4 years David Elliot buried 29 Jul 1862 age 3 months William Elliott of Sidmonton buried 6 Sep 1863 age 66 (see later info on Wm.) Sophia Elliott buried 28 May 1871 age 42. so it looks as though Alice was second wife. Arthur Elliott buried 8 Jan 1892 age 11 years James Elliott buried 17 Dec 1906 age 73 years Alice Elliott buried 13 Sep 1924 age 74 years I am unable to check either of the marriages if they took place at St. Lawrence, Ecchinswell as the Marriage Register for this period is still held by the parish (as far as I know) I did check St. Mary, Kingsclere, St. Paul, Woodlands and St. Mary, Sidmonton registers. Both these marriage should be in CRO index however. St. Mary, Kingsclere Baptisms give James son of William Elliott and Ann Hillit? of Ecchinswell born 20 Jan 1833 bapt 3 Mar 1833. William Elliott, widower of Ecchinswell married Ann Harlott spinster of Ecchinswell by banns on 10 Dec 1832. Witnesses: James Harlott and Sarah Hill So although the baptism makes it seem they were not married they had in fact married just before James was born. William and Ann were still having children baptised in Ecchinswell until 1850s. I will look for the other children later and let you have the details and also Williams earlier marriage > I would be pleased to forward the marriage, children and > death dates of Mary Ann if it is of interest. I would like any details which relate to Kingsclere and surrounding parishes for my 'Kingsclere Families Database' -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Debian GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, SMITH Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES
