Hello All, I found this write-up from Jim, he wrote it in 1999, I kept in my Interesting Items file, I thought you would like to read. I hope this is OK with you Jim. From: Jim.Bates@bbs.tardis.net Hullo all, A friend has found in the Court Rolls for the Manor of Kingsclere Lordship a couple of my forebears in the Homage (which he says is the then equivalent to a Jury). Because I have one or two members of this family by reason of common Christian names e.g. James and Richard that could into these positions does anybody know how these Homage members were selected, and what would position would they have to hold in the community of those times? Top of the document; The Court Baron of the most noble Harry Duke of Bolton there held the twenty-seventh day of June in the twenty-ninth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the second and in the Year of our Lord 1755. Steward was Morgan Keene, Gentleman. Bailiff was Abraham Lawrence. The Homage was made up with James Holden; Abraham Lawrence; James Bates Thomas Hawkins; Richard Bates; John Dyer. Now most of the dispositions made by the Homage consist of one or two lines. I will only quote where surnames appear. "We present and continue Wm Appleton and Stephen Wise to be Haywards for the year ensuing". "We present the death of Mrs Mary Serle and that a Heriot and Relief are due to the Lord of this Manor". "We present the death of Francis Hyde Esq and that Mrs Catherine Hyde and his sister is next taker and that a Heriot and Relief are due to the Lord of the Manor". We present the death of Thomas Pyror Gentleman and that Mr Thomas Pryor his son is next taker and that Heriots and Reliefs are due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present an alienation from Edmund Bramston Esq to Mr Joseph Portal and that a Relief is due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present an Alienation from Richard Gaffis to William Appleton and that a Relief is due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present Thomas Skeats to be Tythingman for the Lordship Tything for the year ensuing". Thomas Holding & Abraham Lawrence Affeerers Sworn and do Affeer the Americaments as set. I hope that some of these names are of use to somebody? from that Fawkesian repro-bates Jim. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30
