I am researching the name NICKLESS on my maternal side in Hampshire.By 1839 I can prove ties to Kingsclere but before that I have no proof just assumptions.I had looked for a long time for one,George NICKLESS,but could not find him until after his marriage. To make a long story short, through a distant relative of my mother's I found out that until shortly after his marriage, which took place in Kingsclere,he was known as George TAYLOR.He was born illigitametly to Elizabeth NICKLESS and was given to the TAYLOR family to raise as they were distant relatives. This was in 1817. This relative of my mother's had the family tree back as far as 1671 and even as far back as that when the name was NICHOLSON not NICKLESS it still says (alias TAYLOR).It would appear the NICHOLSON gave was to NICHOLAS about 1740 and then became NICKLESS around 1780 but still retained the (alias TAYLOR) I can understand the George who was born in 1817 being given to another family to be raised and using their surname but why all the others as well? Were they all born this same way? By the way,George TAYLOR became George NICKLESS shortly after his marriage because his mother came forward and told him the truth of his parentage shortly before the 1841 census.Without this older relative's letters and family Bible I would have been looking forever.I'm not sure if that will help anyone with their TAYLOR research but if not it will certainly confuse them.
