    3. The1841 census does not give birthplaces. It asks the question "Was the person born in this county?", to which the answer is "Yes" or "No". Ages of persons over 15 are rounded down to the nearest five years. For example the age of a 24-year-old is entered as 20. If anyone has access to the 1841 census for Burghclere, Hampshire please can you look up an ancestor of mine called Thomas Challis (aged approx 32 married to Mary) and his family. I need to confirm his birthplace. In the 1851 census he is 42 and his birthplace seems to be hard to read. It has either "Bambury, Wilts?" or "Bampton, Wilts?" (from the HGS index). I have searched the baptism register for Hankerton & Charlton (Bambury Hill Farm, Wilts)and Chiseldon & Liddington (Badbury, Wilts) but found no Challis'. Also his wife Mary's age in the 1851 census seems to be a bit on the low side (30?). I'd be glad if anyone could confirm her age or maiden name. Any information or advice would be appreciated. Best regards Ron Challis
