Hi List, Peter wrote: "Just out of interest I had a conversation with a local builder today. He told me that he bought all the stones from the churchyard in the 1960's and used most of them to build a water garden in a house in Highclere or thereabouts" ============= From my visit to Kingsclere back in November of 2001and my walk through the churchyard i must say that the headstones used to kerb the walkway were of reasonable condition and much of the inscriptions were readable. The thing that is bugging me a bit is, Did the council in the 60`s keep a record of the headstones that were kept and a record of those that were unsafe and "flogged off" as scrap! Also is there any written "for and Against" the idea of removal literature available, Newspaper cuttings etc. Kindest Regards Steve Prout (Researching PROUT/PROUTE/SPROUT) PS: Curious Note: Who was on the committee at the time - Did they have any ancestors in the yard ?
