John, Thank you very much for the information. I originally got the name Stephen as Anne Miles father's name from ataylor on rootwebs. He mentioned the baptisms of Mary, Daniel and Hannah but actually having the dates as well as the name of Benjamin is wonderful. With regards to Daniel 1832 I found an entry in the 1881 census that seems to fit : Dwelling: 81 Grigg Street Census Place: Portsea, Hampshire, England Source: FHL Film 1341283 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1157 Folio 59 Page 23 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Daniel MILES M 49 M Kingsclere, Hampshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Porter At Wine Merchant Mary F. Do you know how to go about getting birth, marriage, death certs for people born before 1837? Are you related in someway to the Miles family and if so would you like any information I have on Anne Miles' children from her marriage to Henry Reeves (not that I have a great deal)? Thanks again for all your help. Nothing in the 1881 census details to give a clue. > With regards to your replys regarding the Doe family I wondered > how the name Myhill links to Miles? If you allow for the fact that 'ampshire 'ogs 'abitually miss sounding the Hs in names Myhill isn't pronounced My Hill but more like Mile or Mial, Spelling of the name Miles varies from child to child within the same family when you look at the baptism registers. Remember that nealry all thesepeople were illiterate andonly the clergy had any education and many probably spoke very differently to the 'yokels' and tended to write what they heard without too much regard to how the parents thought the name was spelt. Spelling of names didn't settle down until most people could read and write and began signing the registers themselves. Even then siblings can sign their names with different spellings, and this can sometimes be seen on the same page of a marriage register where groom and a sibling witness have differently spelt surnames, As far as the many variants in spelling for Miles are concerned I have tended to stick to the Miles spelling for my own database, but I know other people do not. > Do you know how to go about getting birth, marriage, death > certs for people born before 1837? The simple amswer is that you cannot as they didn't exist before that date, the best you can do is get a printout of the entry in the appropriate register. This needs a fairly expensive fiche/film reader that can print the individual entry. These are mostly to be found in big libraries or record offices. > Are you related in someway to the Miles family and if so would > you like any information I have on Anne Miles' children from > her marriage to Henry Reeves (not that I have a great deal)? I don't have a blood relationship to a Miles line (there are three unrelated lines in Kingsclere) but have several relationships through marrriage, for example my 5xgt grandmother Sarah Cooper, as a widow, married Benjamin Bosley (or Bozley or Boseley) whose sister Rachel married Samuel Miles born 1806. Samuel was a brother of the Benjamin who married Sarah Lee. or Mary Miles dau of Robert Miles and Elizabeth Holley (who are 4xgr grandparents of our listowner) married Thomas Seymour. Thomas and Mary's son Alfred married Claribell Smith who was a sister of my gt-aunt Alice Cooper who lived in Ecchinswell where we used to go on holidays in the 1940s. and so it goes on, I am probably related in some way to half the regular people on this list and this is one of the reasons I am (slowly) doing a 'One Place' of Kingsclere. It is one of the reasons I don't mind doing lookups for any of the Kingsclere names as everything I find gets added to my database and so I say yes to any offer of names descendants of anyone with Kingsclere connections. If only because it will in the long run save me work <grin> --- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
Hello Kerry, To make the MILES research a little easier for you, as the other researchers know there are 3 main MILES family trees in Kingsclere there is my own that goes back to Joseph MILES/MILLS married Martha BRIDGMAN 20 September 1780 Kingsclere 2. John MYHILL/MILES married Hannah POCOCK 30 November 1796 Kingsclere 3.William MILES married Mary WITHERS 30 October 1783 Thatcham, Berkshire Some researcher have gone back further than what I have listed for you, so be very careful when you see a MILES in Kingsclere, as each tree has some of the same names on it. So far I have not heard of anyone that has linked these 3 MILES families together, I hope that one day we will be able to do that.
