Dear listers I wonder if anyone has any records for East Woodhay? I am particularly interested in the 1851 census. I am seeking William and Martha LAWRENCE aged 70 - 90 if still alive and William LAWRENCE their son aged about 45. His sisters were Mary Ann, Maria, Joanna, Rebekah, Fanny and Elizabeth. I know that most of these would have probably married, if still alive but it is possible that I might find one unmarried in 1851. All the children were born between 1797 and 1810 so should be 40 - 53 years old. I am also interested in locating the marriage of William LAWRENCE to Martha UNKNOWN possibly in East Woodhay c1796. My LAWRENCE family are connected with Newbury through the marriage of Ann LARENCE, baptised 1800 to Charles PURDUE. I know she died in 1851, just after the census was taken, in which her birthplace is recorded as East Woodhay. I am hoping that she is indeed the Ann LAWRENCE born to William and Martha LAWRENCE. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind regards Carol in Berkshire

Hello Carol The Bishops Transcripts for East Woodhay confirm William (junior) was born about 1805 and was baptised on 5 Dec 1805, The other 7 children are also recorded, as you say, between 1797 & 1810. > I am also interested in locating the marriage of William LAWRENCE to > Martha UNKNOWN possibly in East Woodhay c1796. There is no marriage in East Woodhay for William & Martha, I have also looked in the BTs for Kingsclere (includes Ecchinswell), Burghclere & Highclere with no trace of the marriage there either. I have ordered the BTs for Newtown which is another possible parish for them to have married and will let you know if there is anything there. The next obvious place is West Woodhay, but this is in Berks. I have checked the on-line Berkshire Marriage Index but there is no entry for him as Lawrence or Laurence, however not all parishes are included & W Woodhay is one _not_ included so this isn't conclusive. > My LAWRENCE family are connected with Newbury through the marriage > of Ann LARENCE, baptised 1800 to Charles PURDUE. There are quite a lot of Lawrences & Purdues in the Newbury RD for 1851 including a Charles Purdue & Ann with 4 children eldest age 16. All children born in Newbury, but it seems likely there were other children born before Emma There is a Martha Lawrence age 77, widow, monthly nurse, born Basildon, Berks recorded as Nurse in household of Joseph Bunny, Medical Practitioner and Surgeon at 12 Northbrook Street. Could this be your Martha, as the age is about right? Was she working as a Nurse in Newbury at time of marriage? if so the marriage may have taken place there. I have just about exhausted my resources but hope this helps. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
