By co-incidence I was doing some digging into Kingsclere parish records this morning and found Church Brown married Martha Wheatland at St. Mary, Kingsclere on 12 Aug 1750. Church and Martha baptised Mary on 1 Mar 1750 (born 23 Feb 1750, so before parents marriage but the register doesn't have it as an illegit birth) and Hannah on 29 Jul 1753 (born 19 Jul 1753). Both Church and Martha were of Kingsclere parish when they married. Cannot see any other baptism around this period for Church and Martha. I was hoping to find the baptism of a Church Brown around 1766 but so far have found nothing to link Church Brownjohn of Greenham Common to Church Brown of Kingsclere but your Michael and Sarah maybe the answer to this problem. > This makes me think that she is not the Martha > baptised 1768 d Thomas & Mary. I agree this seems to be another Martha but Thomas could be a brother of Church Brown (the 1st!) > Michael B. & Sarah ? baptised 4 children at > Greenham(at least) > Mary-26 Nov 1758 > Thomas-13 Feb 1763 > Church-13 Oct 1765 > Catherine-29 Sep 1769 I don't have this family so perhaps the Church I have as born ca 1766 and living Greenham Common in 1851 is in fact this Church and not a son of Church Brown (1st) as I thought. It would also explain why I haven't found a baptism in Ecchinswell. The Michael Brownjohn, buried Kingsclere on 15 Jun 1796, is probably this one. > so there is roome for Martha somewhere! If my supposition that Church was a son of Michael is correct, then that puts Martha in this family as well. Perhaps also the Mary who married John Bathe in 1781 is Mary bapt. Greenham in 1758 and the Amos who married Mary Bathe in 1788 may be another son. > "Church" is an odd name to give a child ,but it does > seem to be a family one. It may be that it was a maiden name of a wife of an earlier generation Brown(john) > I see the 1851 also lists the following BROWNJOHNs at > Stroud Green Greenham, probably related as you say, > Thomas-44 I found his baptism on 26 Jan 1806 in the St Mary parish register fiche. Parents John Brownjohn & Mary of Ecchinswell (John is recorded as being a Miller) plus two more children, Harriet bapt 13 Jun 1802 and Henry bapt 2 Sep 1804 but no can't see a marriage in Kingsclere register. Plus another illegit birth - James BrownJohn, son of Hannah Kuel of Ecchinswell, bapt 17 May 1796. Hope this all makes sense!! -- John Lewis
