I am not looking for this family specifically, but I have a couple of Brownjohn marriages to the BATHE family which I do have an interest in. Amos born Ecchinswell married Mary Bathe 2 Feb 1788 probably in Ecchinswell although the marriage entry is in Kingsclere St. Mary Register. Mary Brownjohn probably born Ecchinswell married John Bathe 22 Dec 1781. I also have a Thomas Brownjohn with wife Mary living Stroud Green in 1851 with several children including a son called Church. In Greenham Common in 1851 is another Church Brownjohn, a retired watchmaker age 85 born Sidmonton. In view of the names I suspect they are related. > My gt gt grandmother was a Martha BROWNJOHN,born about > 1766-8ish,according to the 1851 census at Sydmonton,I > have found baptisms for her siblings at Greenham but > not for Martha. > She was the daughter of Michael BROWNJOHN & Sarah ?,I > do not have their marriage,Michael was buried in 1796 > possibly at Ecchinswell. I have had a quick look at St. Mary, Kingsclere baptisms (these cover Kingsclere, Ecchinswell & Sidmonton at this period) and found Betty bapt 27 Mar 1763 to James & Ann John bapt 30 Mar 1764 to Thomas & Mary Timothy bapt 26 Nov 1765 to Thomas & Mary Martha bapt 23 April 1768 to Thomas & Mary (Thomas a maltster) So not many Brownjohn in the period 1755-1770 but there are plenty of BROWN baptisms with parents James & Ann and Thomas & Mary, so I have to wonder if the name got shortened by the parish clerk. I found this to be the case with the Bishops Transcripts where Mary who married John Bathe is Brownjohn in the Marriage register but plain Brown in the BTs I have also seen Burghclere recorded as birthplace in 1851 census. So that is another place to look. I don't have any registers for this parish so cannot help. > I recently received and answered a queery regarding a > James BROWNJOHN born 1773 at Kingsclere,I quoted the > note I had made(some time ago):- > Baptism-Kingsclere-14 March 1773-James,illigit s of > John BROWNJOHN lab,of Headley Common & Apple? The entry is:- James (illegit) son of John Brownjohn and ------ Appleton, labourer, Headley Common. 14 Mar 1773 > Since replying I have wondered why the mothers name is > not mentioned-it seems unusual, and I am wondering if I The officiating minister jotted it down on the back of an old envelope and couldn't read his writing when he later sat down to enter up the register, so he left a blank space. Lots of entries like this with, some without any names for parents. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
