    3. Hi all, I am new to the list and this is my first post. Thanks to John Lewis and Barbara Mallyon for your help. My 3x grandfather was Jacob Smith (wheelwright) who lived near Plastow Green and was married to Ann WHEELER in 1821. They had a son James (a carpenter) in 1823 who later lived at Hannington. James married SARAH GARRETT of Hannington. The 1851 census suggests Jacobs dob to be c 1798. My great grandfather George SMITH farmed at Manor farm North Oakley after the TWITCHEN family. Can anybody tell me when the Twitchens gave up the farm? They still have it in the 1891 census. There are links between the Hannington SMITHS and late 19th century SMITHS in Baughurst when SMITH married SMITH. The families mainly moved up the social scale and became farmers and the SMITHS and ALLENS had many of the farms around Hannington, Ibworth, Baughurst, Wotton and Oakley. KENTS farmed around Wotton,Ramsdell and Baughurst. Jacob SMITH is currently one of my brickwalls. If anybody has any infomation that would be super and if I can help with the second half of 19th century ALLENS, SMITHS, or KENTS, only to pleased so to do. William ALLEN from Deane married Ellen ALLEN from Tadley, in the next generation Ellen Gertrude ALLEN married Frederick KENT and then in the following generation Lena Ellen KENT married Thomas SMITH. For anybody interested in the name POVEY, they might like to note there is a POVEYS Farm at Stoney Heath near Ramsdell. My mother was born there in 1924 (Vera Ellen Smith). Best wishes, Nigel Gerdes (Bradford on Avon)
