Good Evening I have been advised by a researcher that my Bates in Kintbury Berkshire could have originated in the Kingsclere area. I have John Bates (birthplace unknown) he was a wheelwright married a Betty Matthews (Father also a wheelwright) from Hamstead Marshall this marriage took place 12th January 1793 in Hamstead Marshall. We also have as a witness at a family marriage a Sophia Bates(nothing else known about her) but the name Sophia used from that time on in more than one branch of my family. They had the following children Mary, John, Charles, Daniel, Sophia, Hannah, Elizabeth. If anyone is doing Bates I would be very interested. Both Daniel & Charles Bates mixed up in the machine riots of 1831. Thankyou Beverley Smith
