    3. A couple of days ago I had an email from a lady in NZ which said amongst other things "I have a forebear, Robert Fisher born about 1806 in Kingsclere, a labourer who joined the army on 17 October 1826 and was stationed in India. He was married on 11 April 1837 to Harriet McAndrew at St John's Church Trichinopoly, India by Banns." This posed a slight problem in that I didn't have a Robert born in 1806 so I asked some questions and have come to the conclusion that Robert is actually Robin who was baptised on 29 Oct 1809 to Benjamin and Martha (Coe). The baptism entry notes he was born on 11 Oct 1806. This fits nicely with this bit of info: Burial: Kamptee 13 Sept 1841 Robert Fisher Pte HM 39th Regiment aged 34 years and 11 months at Kamptee (India Record Office & Library) Casualty Returns of 39th Regt. Foot (held at PRO Kew) 1279 Pte Robert Fisher Born at Kingsclere, Hampshire, Labourer, attested 17 Oct 1826 died at Kamptee 12 Sept 1841. 4-4-11 paid to his widow and children. No Prize Money No will Wife Harriet at Kamptee East Indies My guess is that he was know as Rob or Robbie and when he enlisted said he was Robbie Fisher and the recruiting sergeant entered his name as Robert. Robert had a couple of children and the son Robert George also joined the Army and eventually ended up in Ipswich where he died. One of his two daughters, Teresa, became a schoolteacher and emigrated to New Zealand in 1911 and is the grandmother of my correspondent. The family apart from the NZ ones are now on the website at http://startx.co.uk:2317/Kingsclere?i=1993. Teresa was a second cousin of my great-grandmother Esther Fisher and will be related to several other Kingsclere-listers with Fisher connections. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
