    1. Re: [King] John Arlott et al
    2. I have checked with John's book "Basingstoke Boy". It mentions amongst other things:- John's wife was Nellie Jenvey Clarke daughter of Thomas Clarke of Brockenhurst. Nellie was one of 12 children (6 boys & 6 girls) all with Jenvey as 2nd name after their father's mother's surname. His parents married April 1912 by local Meads curate (Meads part of Eastbourne) in Eastbourne They moved to Basingstoke after marriage & lived initially in terraced cottage in May Street. Old John (grandfather) served in Navy, covering China coast & extensively tattooed. His father worked for Thorneycrofts before joining up in 1915 (served in Mesopotamia & India). They moved to the lodge in the cemetery (where John was born) when his grandfather, who was the registrar, moved into a new house in a new cemtery bought by the council as old one was filling up. His father had 4 sisters, Kit, Norah, Lillian & Edie (who married Bill Baldwin). Nellie's father died 1917 in Eastbourne. On his return from WW1 his father became assistant registrar (to Old John) & remained working there until he retired. The aunts seem to confirm that it is the John Arlott born circa 1856 at Silchester is the grandfather of the commentator John Arlott. Gerald Soper PS It seems the George Arlott connected to my family is not related to the above Arlotts. Crickinfo has this Full name Leslie Thomas John Arlott Born February 25, 1914, Chapel Hill, Basingstoke, Hampshire Died December 14, 1991, Alderney, Channel Islands (aged 77 years 292 days) Also known as Jack (to family when younger) but I couldn't find out anything more via googling but FreeBMD has this entry which is almost certainly him:- Births Jun 1914: Arlott Leslie T J, Jonvy-Clarke, Basingstoke 2c 417 and this marriage Marriages Jun 1912: Arlott William J & Clarke Nellie J, Eastbourne 2b 169 so this ties in with what Gerald says -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
