If there are any cricket lovers out there it seems that John Lewis's excellent site has ancestors of that well known commentator on it. I have just been looking at the siblings of my great grandmother Annie Elliott & her sister Mary Ann married a George Arlott, which made me start looking as I know John Arlott was born in Basingstoke. On looking at John's autobiography his grandfather was John Arlott born in Silchester & his father William John. I think this is the John Arlott born circa 1856 in Silchester on John Lewis's site & he has a son William I on the site. I think this should be William John, as his birth is recorded in Basingstoke RD in Q3 1883 (Volume 2c, page 195) & there does not appear to be any other likely birth. It looks as though George is a brother of John senior (born 1856). Gerald Soper

Crickinfo has this Full name Leslie Thomas John Arlott Born February 25, 1914, Chapel Hill, Basingstoke, Hampshire Died December 14, 1991, Alderney, Channel Islands (aged 77 years 292 days) Also known as Jack (to family when younger) but I couldn't find out anything more via googling but FreeBMD has this entry which is almost certainly him:- Births Jun 1914: Arlott Leslie T J, Jonvy-Clarke, Basingstoke 2c 417 and this marriage Marriages Jun 1912: Arlott William J & Clarke Nellie J, Eastbourne 2b 169 so this ties in with what Gerald says -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
