    1. [King] John SMITH - Elizabeth SIMPSON and family at Ashford Hill with links to BRIDGEMAN

    3. Hi all, A new link. I am slowly seeking to sort out all the SMITHs in the Kingsclere area. More a journey of hope than arrival. John L's website has the parents of Dorcas Smith b 1858 as just John b 1824 and Elizabeth b 1825. Dorcas married George Bridgeman in 1881. After a stoke of luck with the 1841 census yielding only one recorded John Smith of the right age in the area and the other John Smith marriages on FreeBMD in the 1841 to 1851 window accounted for, it looks like the parents of Dorcas are John Smith born 1823 to James Smith and Sarah, and Elizabeth Simpson born 1824 to Joseph and Charlotte Simpson nee Smith. These are two seperate Smith lines for grandmother Charlotte and father John. John and Elizabeth married in 1847. Dorcas has great grandparents, Issac and Dinah Simpson nee Tull, and Joseph and Mary Smith nee Taylor. Even better - Dorcas had an uncle Henry Simpson who married a Dorcas Simpson b 1808 at Pamber, so its a fair guess who she was named after since both her sisters shared the same name as an aunt or grandmother on the paternal Smith side. Thanks to John for the information to be able to tackle the unresolved link. Regards, Nigel Gerdes

I wish you lots of luck, the Smiths are a minefield ;-) > After a stoke of luck with the 1841 census yielding only one > recorded John Smith of the right age in the area and the other John > Smith marriages on FreeBMD in the 1841 to 1851 window accounted > for, it looks like the parents of Dorcas are John Smith born 1823 > to James Smith and Sarah, and Elizabeth Simpson born 1824 to Joseph > and Charlotte Simpson nee Smith. I think this is going to be the only way to resolve the Smith problem. I copied several sheets (11 and a bit in fact) of A4 paper with Smith baptisms from the early indexed transcriptions of the Kingsclere registers when I was trying to find the ancestors of my 'Smith alias Foster' lot. I still have them and will try scanning them if anyone wants a copy, they are written in pencil in my terrible handwriting so may not end up very legible -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

As you probably know I have a Stephen Smith who married Frances Crate Wickens at Burghclere in 1801. I have just looked at the Burghclere BTs and the first Smith entry is that of Phoebe bapt 23 Jul 1780 to Joseph & Mary. Co-incidence or wishful thinking? Joseph & Mary continued having children to 1789 with the last entry having surname Smyth. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
