I have just been on John's Website and note that he has a report I made re Jonathan. This report has the date of Marriage for Jonathan and Ann SMITH as the 16 April 1777 but it was the 26 April 1777. The Banns were called at St. Marys on the 24th Nov, 1st & 8th Dec 1776 [Page 59 Entry No. 325]. I have always wondered why the Marriage took place so long after the Banns were called - was there a holdup due to the Bastardy Order that was made against Francis LAWRENCE, Jonathan being Base Born to Elizabeth JEWELL. Under the Will of his Grandfather John JEWELL, because his Aunt Sarah BRISTER had died, Jonathan inherited his Grandfathers estate - the wording describes him as "my loving Grandson". The amount of the estate did not amount to £40 [I hold copy of Will]. I have Ann SMITH as being Baptised on the 15 May 1744 at St. Marys, K. The change of name of the man Elizabeth JEWELL married. I see John LEWIS has John FORD and now I see it is reported as Richard FORD. As I have not personally researched the FORD family can we take it that the Australian correspondent's research is correct - grateful for the info. Denis

I do have the correct date for the marriage as I had checked, as I do most times, with the actual entry on the fiche. But thanks for mentioning it. > Under the Will of his Grandfather John JEWELL, because his Aunt > Sarah BRISTER had died, Jonathan inherited his Grandfathers estate > - the wording describes him as "my loving Grandson". I'll add that note to Jonathan's page. > I have Ann SMITH as being Baptised on the 15 May 1744 at St. Marys, It is possible I picked the wrong Ann to marry Jonathan to :-( When the lamp for my fiche reader gets delivered I'll check the baptisms register as I don't currently have an Ann baptised on 15th May 1744 in the database. > The change of name of the man Elizabeth JEWELL married. I don't know where I got the name John Ford from as I cannot find any source for this in my collection of emails. The IGI does have him as Richard plus all the family Barbara listed _but_ it is a member submitted entry on the IGI so without further evidence it has to be suspect. The IGI has no extracted records for Shaw cum Donnington on-line so if someone happens to be visiting Berks RO and can check the actual registers for us it would help. I have done some digging into on-line records and found a William Ford and an Abraham Ford raising families in Burghfield and wonder if they could be the two listed by Barbara as baptised in Shaw in 1755 and 1768 respectively. An Abraham Ford married Martha Trewin at St. Mary the Virgin, Burghfield on 29 Apr 1793 and had Elizabeth ca 1794, Richard ca 1796, Charles ca 1801 and David ca 1805 A William Ford married Sarah Higgs at the same church on 20 Jul 1777, I haven't recorded his children as yet. These marriage dates fit the ages of the two baptised in Shaw pretty well. I haven't been able to link together the Hanson Fords as yet but have found several more, Hanson Ford married Mary BURBIDGE 30 Oct 1715 in Newbury and had William ca1720, Richard ca1722, John ca1724 and Hanson ca1725. I have the 1722 Richard married to Ann BENNET with Hanson ca1747, Mary ca1748 and David ca 1751. (Children bapt at Shaw.) Hanson Ford married Elizabeth TIDBURY at St. Mary Thatcham on 14 May 1780 and had 2 children Dinah ca1782 and Esther ca1784. Maybe others born elsewhere. Hanson ca1818 Sulhamstead married Elizabeth CORDERY in Hartley Wintney RD (probably Heckfield) in Dec Qtr 184. He was a widow in 1861 Census and married Jane TULL in Bradfield RD Sep Qtr 1864. He had Charles ca1842, Eliza ca1844, Joshua ca1846, Caleb ca1846, William ca1848, Hanson ca1851 and James ca1853 from the fist marriage and Ann Hannah ca1865, Alfred ca1867 and David ca1869 from the second marriage. I have more Fords but I'll put my queries about one particular family into another email as they don't seem to link to the Berkshire ones. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
