Births Sep 1851: Hillier John, Hungerford 6 216 1891 Census, Wigmore Farm, Stratfield Saye: John Hillier, head, 40, farm bailiff, Lambourne Berks Fanny -do-, wife, 39, , Burghclere Edith -do-, dau, 11, scholar, Knowle Hill Hants I haven't been able to find John Hillier in the 1861 census but there is one Hillier family in Lambourn that year which could be his: John Hillier, head, 39 , gardener (domestic), Marlborough Elizabeth -do-, wife, 44, , Coop Littage, Som William -do-, son, 15, plough boy, Lambourn Mary Ann -do-, dau, 11, scholar, Lambourn Elizabeth -do-, dau, 8, scholar, Lambourn Henry -do-, son, 5, scholar, Lambourn Albert -do-, son, 3, , Lambourn George F -do-, son, , Lambourn As for Naomi Smith, all the census records give her place of birth as Burghclere but there is no baptism for her in the Burghclere Bishop's Transcripts, however the year 1808 is missing. We know her father was Thomas Smith born ca1777 from the 1861 Census when he is recorded in household of James Goddard in Burghclere 'father in law, 84 almsman ag lab, Burghclere' A Thomas Smith 'of Highclere' married Jane Tanner at Burghclere on 8 Feb 1796 and baptised Jonathan ca 1800, James ca 1803, Rebecca ca 1805, Joanna ca 1806 and Jemima ca 1806, all at Burghclere. There are no entries for a Thomas & Jane in the Kingsclere RD area in the Hants Bapt Index. Thomas Smith died (probably) Mar Qtr 1862 and a Jane Smith age 42 was buried at Highclere on 25 Apr 1820 who seems likely to have been Jane Tanner as this makes her year of birth very similar to that of Thomas. I have checked Highclere & Newtown BTs plus the Hants Bapt Index for Naomi with no luck, (Newtown is missing years 1807-1812) so it really needs someone to check Burghclere for 1808 to see if Naomi was baptised that year. I have provisionally put her in the family of Thomas & Jane. To get Thomas' parents needs records earlier than the BTs. A William & Elizabeth Smith baptised a child at Highclere in 1780 (and later) so Thomas could have been born there rather than Burghclere. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
