William & Edward SMITH of North St., Frank MILES, Joan and Richard MORTIMER and Thomas KEEP. ... Jan 21 None of the children excluded last week has returned to school. ... Jan 28 ... The Nurse came in on Tuesday, and excluded two children one for dirty head & the other for impetigo. ... Feb 4 The Assistant Mr BULL was unable to attend to his duties this afternoon owing to a severe attack of rheumatism in the leg. ... Feb 11 Mr BULL was unable to attend to his duties till Wednesday morning when he came as usual. ... The two SMITHs were not in a fit state to return on Monday. Stanley WELLMAN & William SMITH were absent yesterday and today through illness. There are still several children suffering with Impetigo. ... Feb 18 ... William PRATER & Frank MILES have not yet returned to school. Feb 25 Took Henry PRATER's name off the books for the time being as he is in a London Hospital for some weeks. His brother William is still suffering from impetigo & has not been to school again this week. ... Mar 4 Frank MILES & William PRATER returned to school on Monday. The Nurse called on Thursday morning. Fred POWERS was sent home as his head was verminous. He returned however in the afternoon. ... Apr 22 Nearly half of the children in the Infants' Room have been absent throughout the week having contracted coughs & colds during the cold spell of the previous week. ... The work throughout this class is so much below the average owing to the number of dull boys, that special attention has had to be given to them since their removal from Standard III. As no Teachers' Books were sent for instruction in carrying out the proposed Scheme a letter was sent to the Director of Education asking for a copy for each Standard. An answer was received this morning saying that no further help regarding books could be given. Until these books for Teachers are supplied it will not be possible to introduce the Scheme. ... Closed this afternoon May 13 for Whitsun Holidays. May 27 School re-opened on Monday ... The School Nurse came on Wednesday and examined the Infants. Notices were sent to the Parents of children needing attention. Jun 3 Alfred ROSE asked leave for a month as he was going to Wales to an aunt. He said he should be attending school there, in consequence of which his name has been taken off the books for the time eing. ...The Nurse called on Thursday and examined the boys. George POWERS was sent home with a dirty head. Jun 17 The Attendance Officer called on Wednesday & took the names of absentees. S. HUNT, S. WELLMAN, C. SEYMOUR & R. FLUX have been irregular this week. ... Jun 24 Alfred ROSE, who went to South Wales a month ago returned to school this week. ... On Friday (today) Miss LLOYD was granted leave of absence owing to her brother's wedding. ... Jul 15 ... Owing to the intense heat during the whole week, very little drill & physical exercises have been taken. ...Received a certificate from Dr MAPLES on Wednesday excluding Sidney WICKENS for fourteen days owing to skin disease. Jul 22 The half holiday proposed for the Sunday School Treat on Thursday was not given this week owing to the death of Mr W. OLDING. ... Jul 29 Owing to the death of Mr W. HOLDING of Elm Grove the Sunday School Treat which was postponed took place on Thursday afternoon this week ... Aug 5 ... Commenced on Tuesday with only a very fair attendance partly owing to a heavy rain storm before school time. ... Closed this afternoon for the Summer holidays Aug 8 to Sep 12th. Sep 16 Commenced school on Monday Sept 12 ... The children throughout the school were very clean and neat and settled down to their work in earnest. A note was received from Mrs FOSTER stating that her son Clifford was not returning from his holiday till the end of the week. The School Nurse called on Tuesday and found the boys in a very satisfactory condition with the exception of Reginald POWERS who was sent home to have his head cleaned. He returned in the afternoon. Owing to the satisfactory way the scholars had settled down to their work they were rewarded by having the school closed at 4.10 pm this afternoon. ... Sep 23 The attendance this week has been the best for the present School Year the percentage rising to 97.48. On Monday and Tuesday the Head Teacher was unable to attend school owing to illness his place being ably filled by Mr BULL who had charge of the whole of the Boys' Department. The scholars worked diligently and gave no trouble. On Wednesday morning Nurse PLUMER visited the Infants' Room and reported very favourably upon the condition of the children. Sep 30 ... Received cheque for Salaries this Friday morning & paid out to teachers & Caretaker. Oct 14 Owing to irregularity of some of the scholars who went to Newbury Fair on Thursday the attendance dropped to 93.1 this week. The Attendance Officer called today & took names of absentees. The scholars were allowed twenty minutes football this afternoon as a reward for good work done throughout the week. Oct 21 ... Owing to the rain on Wednesday morning just before school commenced, several of the country boys came in later than usual. Oct 28 Received notice that Richard MORTIMER would not be able to attend school for three months owing to injury to his knee. His name has been taken off the books for the time being. Nov 4 The percentage dropped to 94.03 this week owing to the wet weather. The Attendance Officer called on Tuesday morning and brought employment cards for Stanley WELLMAN and Gilbert FAULKNER. Nurse PLUMER examined children on Tuesday morning, and found each child in a satisfactory condition. Received certificate from Dr MAPLES on Wednesday exempting Richard MORTIMER from attending school for fifty days owing to injured knee. Eight boys in the First Division were absent today owing to the rain. Nov 11 ... The latter part of the week has been very cold - the physical exercises have therefore been to a great extent taken in school. Owing to the snow on Tuesday morning one or two of the country boys did not attend school. Nov 18 Inspected the offices this afternoon and found them in a satisfactory condition except in the Infants' urinal, which requires attention, the drain pipe being broken. ... Nov 25 ... Among the absentees were Sydney WICKENS suffering from tooth ache, Reginald POTTER from a sore foot, Percy BROWN sick headache and Stanley FAULKNER sores on leg. Dec 2 Mr BULL has been unable to attend school since Monday owing to the serious illness of his wife. and himself. Dec 12 Mr BULL has not been able to return to his duties this week. Received post card from the Director of Education on Friday requesting a Medical Certificate to be sent to the Education Office by return of post. The certificate was posted on this afternoon. There is still a good deal of sickness among the younger children which has caused the percentage to drop to 82.1. The Upper Division of the School has had to work independently to a great extent this week owing to the absence of Mr BULL. The scholars have been very attentive to their work and have been doing their best to lighten the work of the Head Teacher, who has been working single handed since Nov 28th. Dec 16 Mr BULL has been unable to attend school this week. Yesterday Thursday he brought another medical certificate saying he would not be in a fit state to return to his duties till after the Xmas olidays. ... The scholars in the upper division of the school have again been of great help through their good behaviour & attention to their work. Dec 23 Closed this Friday morning for the Christmas Holidays.
