Further digging has produced this James: JAMES DANCE, Christening: 03 AUG 1783, Farnborough, Berks Father: JOSEPH DANCE, Mother: MARY Given James called his first born Joseph and had a daughter named Mary it looks like a good bet. Parents marriage is also in an IGI batch JOSEPH DANCE & MARY NEWS, 11 MAY 1783, Farnborough, Berks no other children in the Farnborough batch and nothing for birth of Joseph on IGI and no obvious burials in BBI. Farnborough isn't all that far from Kingsclere Woodlands and farmers did move around quite a bit so until someone finds a better James I'm going with this one -- John Lewis Debian & the GeneWeb genealogical data server

    3. John and list, I would not jump to conclusions on the parents of James DANCE for you also have for consideration: James Dance baseborn to Hannah Dance baptised 24 May 1778 at Ramsbury. Wilts, (much closer than Farnborough, Hants ) or James baptised 21 Sept 1777 Winterbourne Stoke, Wilts to John and Ann Dance and born 28 Aug 1777. I would suggest these leads need to be followed up before any conclusion can be drawn on the identity of the first James Dance to appear in Kingsclere. James and Rebecca Dance nee Foster did have a daughter called Hannah. A local single name study on Dance might be the only way to sort them out. Also we have the following from Basingstoke Museum (Auctioneers' Posters) : Finding No 10M57/C105 Title Kingsclere: malthouse called 'Edmond's Strip'. dwelling house, 2 acres of meadow land, cottage in the occupation of James Bryant, retailer of beer, cottage called 'Birds' in the occupation of James Dance Date 1841 A look at the 1841 census should show the county in which James was or was not born. If there are records for the cottage it might show where James b ca 1778 came from unless the James described in the poster was his son b ca 1804. 3. Hi Nigel Thanks for the info.  Do Edmond's Strip and Birds Cottage still exist?  If so, are they actually in Kingsclere?   Regards Pat   --- On Wed, 28/10/09, Nigel St C Gerdes <nigel.gerdes@milnet.uk.net> wrote: From: Nigel St C Gerdes <nigel.gerdes@milnet.uk.net> Subject: Re: [King] Family History - DANCE To: eng-hampshire-kingsclere@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, 28 October, 2009, 7:08 PM John and list, I would not jump to conclusions on the parents of James DANCE for you also have for consideration: James Dance baseborn to Hannah Dance baptised 24 May 1778 at Ramsbury. Actually Farnborough, Berks so a little way north of Chieveley. I did look at the other James Dance you list. The baseborn one fits closest as far as birth date is concerned so it would help to know who Hannah's parents were, if her father was a Joseph that would help. It was the fact of naming first child Joseph that led me away from the Hurstbourne Tarrant one (plus the 1841 Census) > I would suggest these leads need to be followed up before any > conclusion can be drawn on the identity of the first James Dance to > appear in Kingsclere.
