Nigel Just to add to your information. Robert Kewell (b.1834) and Martha Chandler (b. 1842) also had two sons: Joseph Kewell who was baptised on 20th January 1868 in Enborne (IGI). Joseph was buried on 5th February 1871 in Enborne (Berkshire Burial Index). William Charles Kewell, baptised on 3rd March 1867 in Enborne (IGI). I haven't yet looked for William after the 1871 census. In 1871 the family can be found living in Enborne indexed under the surname Hewell. The Alice Kewell born c.1875 cannot be the daughter of Robert Kewell and Martha Chandler as Robert Kewell died in 1873 in Enborne and was buried on 15th April 1873 in Enborne age 37 years. I presume she was born illegitimately after Robert's death. William Kewell (b.1781 Ecchinswell) died on 24th October 1854 in East Woodhay (I have a copy of his death certificate). Caroline Pocock was the informant. I have been told though I haven't checked that Caroline is the mother of William's son-in-law Thomas Pocock. Best wishes Debbie Kennett
Debbie and list, Many thanks for the extra info, it brings resolution to the 1853 and 1854 deaths for two named William Kewell. Yes indeed, the offspring of Robert Kewell, Martha Chandler, and her second husband John Cooper are complex for parentage, and since some of the children did not marry we may never know the who exactly who the father was in some cases. Martha must have worked hard to bring up her family having been twice widowed. In 1891 she was a laundress (horrible work of very low status, often undertaken by those struggling to keep out of the workhouse) but by 1901 she is a retailer of beer at The Vine Inn in Newbury. Oh, to be able to sit them down and hear their stories. Does anybody have a first marriage for John Cooper b ca 1841 Basildon, Berks with a son Thomas W. Cooper b ca 1868 Newbury, Berks? It look like Caroline Pocock nee Birchley is the mother in law of Jane Kewell, but I have not yet seen a baptism for Jane's husband Thomas to place him in his family, there is a gap at just the right time for him ca 1824 and it looks as if he was a replacement child for an older Thomas who died very young using the data on John's website. Thomas was a bricklayer so was James the husband of Caroline. Ten years earlier James was a mason. It looks high probable this is the right family for Thomas Pocock b ca 1824 East Woodhay.
