An exciting development in the world of genetic genealogy is the ability to use autosomal DNA tests with the potential to track the inheritance of particular diseases and traits. There is an excellent article in the current (fall/autum) issue of the Journal of Genetic Genealogy, a peer-reviewed publication, which explains how the process works: http://www.jogg.info/52/files/Turner.htm The cost of these tests is still quite high but as the tests become cheaper it should be possible for people to use this technology in their own family history research by testing extended members of their family.
