It is three or four years ago I joined the list to explore my HEDGECOCK ancestors. With the help of List members we traced Edwin HEDGECOCK to Baughurst where he was born in 1838, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth. It was finally proved that Edwin's Great Grandfather was Matthew HITCHCOCK (See John Lewis's database). In the intervening period I have been a non active List member, hoping to see reports of the HEDGECOCK families but there has been little reported. I have pursued other parts of my family with no link to Kingsclere but recently my interest in HEDGECOCK families has lead to me receiving a large tree of EDGECOCK family members. Edwin although born HEDGECOCK married as HITCHCOCK and moved to Battersea. His children were registered mainly as EDGECOCK and several as HISCOCK but the family mainly remained true to EDGECOCK. My Grandmother Elizabeth EDGECOCK (one of Edwin's Granddaughters) actually married as a HEDGECOCK as did her sisters where as the rest of the family maintained the EDGCOCK name. I am going through this tree to verify the data and I do not know how much of the data John Lewis would be interested to put on his database. Most of the tree contains individuals that have never been to Kingsclere. In doing this evaluation I have included Edwin's brothers and sisters. I have found some information that may be useful to others on the list. Daniel HEDGECOCK born 1846 married Fanny CHITTLE IN 1868. Their marriage record is difficult to find as the entry is for Daniel HITCHCOCK and Fanny WEST. Daniel's surname is similar to his elder brother Edwin but Fanny is a little more complex. She was the daughter of Elizabeth CHITTLE who originally was the Housekeeper to David WEST, a farmer in Tadley (see 1851 census). She obviously became his common law wife and had several of his children, but they are shown as CHITTLE in census returns. Fanny decided to use WEST when she married Daniel. The date of her birth should be c1853 and not c1848, she was only 16 when she married Daniel. I could not find them in the 1871 census but they are in 1881/91/01 as HISCOCK. In 1901 they are living in Reading. I think I have found their death certificates for Daniel (1919 Reading 2c 671) and Fanny (1933 Reading 2c 613) aged 72 and 80 respectively. If I find any other new facts I will report back to the List. Barrie Brinkman
