    1. [King] Matthew Hitchcock

    3. Returning to my investigation of the H*COCK families of the Kingsclere area I have reviewed my notes which included all H*COCK events in all the parishes within 10 miles of Kingsclere. I have also reviewed John Lewis’s database for all H*COCK families. Too my surprise on reaching the family of John Hitchcock (shown as HISCOCK in the database) and Elizabeth (nee TINY) the following children are shown as christened at Brimpton :- Hannah 1773 John 1734-1810 Abraham 1736 Elizabeth 1738 Jeremiah 1740 Henry 1742-1831 Matthew 1745 Matthew was news to me and at the bottom of the page Mike Hutchins had reported to John Lewis the additional child. I wondered how I had missed this child. Returning to the Brimpton parish records I have unravelled why I had missed this. The microfilmed folios for Brimpton have a missing period of 1744-1755 and I had not noticed this gap. The Berkshire Record Office have a copy of the Brimpton Bishop Transcripts on film that confirm this additional child christened in 1745. This leads to a possibility. John Lewis’s database has two Matthews. Matthew1 is recorded as the christening in 1745 and there are no further sightings of this Matthew in the parishes within 10 miles of Kingsclere. Matthew2 is recorded as marrying Elizabeth Appelton at Wolverton in 1773 and of Kingsclere parish. A number of children are born and Matthew dies in Exman at Kingsclere in 1832 aged 91. Clearly when he died no one was around who would have known his birth so it is possible that his age at death is not quite accurate and he was in fact 87. It appears that at least John and Henry brothers of Matthew settled in or near Kingsclere so there seems to be enough evidence that the two Matthews are the same person Barrie
