I can add marriage details: Register entry 304, 7 Feb 1882, St, Paul Woodlands: Alfred Taylor, full age, labourer, Woodlands, father George Taylor, labourer Mary Jane Taylor, full age, spinster, -, Woodlands, father Richard Taylor, labourer Married after Banns by Edward Bulkley Witnesses: Thomas Mills & Sophia Mills Mary Jane signed the register, the others made a mark Children: Births Dec 1882: Taylor Martha, Kingsclere 2c 234 baptised Martha Ann on 25 Jun 1882, abode Hawkhurst Hill, PR entry 1072 Births Sep 1883: TAYLOR Walter John, Kingsclere 2c 229 Births Mar 1888: TAYLOR Elizabeth Alice, Kingsclere 2c 228 Births Mar 1891: TAYLOR Lily, Kingsclere 2c 234 all three born Tadley per 1891 Census and presumably baptised there as there are no other entries in the St Paul regiter Rose was born before marriage so I have recorded her as baseborn. Mary Jane Taylor was recorded as housekeeper to Alfred Taylor, living in August Hill, Kingsclere in 1881 Census, with Rose as daughter age 1 so probably Births Sep 1879: Taylor Rose, Newbury 2c 232 The 1871 Census reveals that Mary Jane's father Richard was born in Hannington ca1808 and that she had an older sister Sophia (who could be the Sophia Mills, witness at wedding) Unfortunately there is no Richard Tailer/Tailor/Tayler/Taylor baptised around that date although there was a Sophia bapt on 25 May 1806 at Hannington to Richard & Elizabeth Taylor. No marriage in Hants Marr Index. Alfred's father George was born ca1817 in Tadley and his mother Ann ca 1822 in Baughurst according to the 1861 Census which has the family at Heath End tadley Marriages Jun 1838: BOWLES Ann & TAYLOR George, Kingsclere 7 129 but once again there is no baptism for a George in Tadley and the only Ann Bowles was bapt 12 Apr 1818 in Burghclere to James & Jane. HMI has this entry: 23 May 1806 Bouels (Bowles) James, Weston Jane, Wootton St Lawrence must pack this in now and have some breakfast ;-) -- John Lewis Debian & the GeneWeb genealogical data server

I already have the above family in the database and it is clearly the wrong family 1851 Census is interesting for George, as in the 1861 Census the first three children were Dennis 1846, Hannah 1849 and Eliza 1850 but in 1851 we have Silchester Side, Tadley George, head, U, 35, farm labourer, Tadley Mary A Hawkins, housekeeper, U, 27, , Baughurst Hannah -do-, dau, 2, , Tadley Eliza -do-, dau, 5m, , Tadley FreeBMD has a marriage for a George Taylor, Jun Qtr 1858 but no matching spouse. I have a Mary Ann Hawkins bapt. 21 Aug 1824 at Baughurst in the database and FreeBMD has Births Jun 1846: HAWKINS Dennis, Kingsclere 7 113 Births Jun 1848: Hawkins Hannah, Kingsclere 7 1_7 but no Eliza born Dec Qtr 1850 to match the 5m old one in the 1851 Census the 1871 Census has George's wife as Mary Ann born Baughurst so we clearly have the same person. It looks like Mary Ann had 3 baseborn children, although George may be the father as they were all born in Tadley. 1881 Census, Tadley: Mary A. Taylor, head, wid, 57, , Baughurst Denis Taylor, son, U, 35, ag lab, Tadley Hannah Taylor, dau, U, 32, rod stripper, Tadley Sarah Taylor, gr-dau, 1, , Tadley 1891 Census, Heath End Tadley: Mary A Taylor, head, Wid, 65, rod sorter, Baughurst Caroline Taylor, dau, U, 28, cook out of situation, Tadley Sarah Taylor, gr-dau, 11, scholar, Tadley 1901, Wellington Street, Nettlebed, Oxon: Frederick Bailey, head, 35, general carrier, Highmore Oxon Rose -do-, wife, 35, , Baughurst Violet -do-, dau, 4, , Nettlebed Frederick -do-, son, 3, , Nettlebed John -do-, father, M, 68, , Nettlebed Mary A Taylor, visitor, M, 78, dealer in wood, Baughurst I have made Sarah, the gr-dau in 1881 a dau of Hannah but she could equally well be the dau of Caroline. FreeBMD doesn't seem to have the marriage of Rose Taylor to Frederick Bailey -- John Lewis Debian & the GeneWeb genealogical data server

Puzzle now is who were his parents. FreeBMD has no entry for him but does have a:- Births Dec 1851: MILLS Patience, Kingsclere 7 122 and Patience & Thomas are to be found as in the 1861 Census as follows: 1861 Census, Heath End, Tadley: William Chapman, head, 56, ag lab, Tadley Ann Chapman, wife, 49, , Hannington --- --- Patience Mills, g-dau, 9, , Tadley Thomas Mills, g-son, 7, , Tadley Ann Chapman was in fact Anne Mills, bapt at Baughurst on on 4 Aug 1811, dau of Richard Mills & Phoebe Bye who had married a few months earlier in Baughurst. I am wondering if Patience and Thomas were children of Thomas Mills Broom Maker, born about July 1815 at Baughurst and his wife Caroline Sadgrove born about 1821 in Wokingham. I have recorded only one child so far, Emma Elizabeth, born about December 1848 in Tadley, so Patience & Thomas would fit into the family. Patience married Isaac Taylor from Brimpton, Sep Qtr 1871, Kingsclere RD and had 6 children by 1891 and they are still living in Baughurst in 1901. I haven't been able to find Thomas in 1871 but he is recorded with wife Sophia in 1881/1891, No trace of them on 1901. -- John Lewis Debian & the GeneWeb genealogical data server
Hi John I saw you email. Copied below back in Feb. but held off responding as I didn't have a birth cert. for my grandfather (Arthur Stephen Taylor b.04/08/1880) at the time. I have a cert now and can confirm that Arthur Stephen Taylor b.04/08/1880 is the son of Israel and Patience Taylor of Baughurst. My problem is that I don't seem to be related to any of the information that came from various emails during February. Also below you state that Israel and Patience Taylor had had 6 children by 1891. I have no doubt you know a lot more about this type of research than I do but! I have ten children listed in that time frame. Clara b.1872/4 met this lady she ran Baughust post office Israel b.1874 Kings Sept. qtr 2c 215 Martha b.1876 Kings 2c 232 Henry Thomas b.1877 Kings Dec. qtr 1877 2c 230 Patience A b.1877 Sarah Jane b.1879 Kings 2c 242 Arthur Stephen b. Aug.1880 my grandfather Florence b.1884 Harry b.1885 Sam b.1890 Which ones do you think are wrong. There seems to be too many Israel's and Patience's married to one another for me to cope with? I lived in Tadley, it is called a town now! but when I went to school there in the 1940's the one school only had about 300 children. So quite a small place then and even smaller back in the time frame we're dealing with.
