    3. John, According to my notes, two separate marriage registers were started in the 1840s/1850s: Ecchinswell from 1844. Register still held in the parish. Sydmonton from 1854. Register held at Hampshire Record Office. The information abouth the Ecchinswell register came from the PRRM Inspection File. This file lists documents held in each parish, as noted in the periodic inspections conducted under the Parochial Registers and Records Measure. I will re-check the file to confirm that the two registers exist, and to see if the 1844 register has been deposited Alan McGowan ----- Original Message ----- From: John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> > I do note place of residence in my records but will now have to change > the place of marriage. I would be interested to know if anyone else answers > your e.mail ,as to date I only know of one other person researching > the Grigg family of Kingsclere . Regards Hi Maureen, glad to be of help. I don't have much on the Grigg family to date. In addition to Ann I have found: Elizabeth married 28 Nov 1791 to Jeoffrey Webb (he signed Jefferey), witness G****** T*** & Mary Grigg John a witness at Mary's wedding Mary married 16 May 1793 to John Blackman, witnesses John Grigg & Elizabeth Webb Stephen (of Wolverton, Hants) married 9 Sep 1793 to Hannah White, witnesses (M)ary Walker & Enos Jacob All at St. Mary, Kingsclere and 'of this parish' unless otherwise stated. So it looks as tho' one Mary at least is a sister. I have got to a marriage for John yet. I had been entering events piecemeal as needed but realised I'd got to the point where I'd do better starting at the beginning and entering everything, as I was going through the fiche time and time again looking for individuals. The 'beginning' in this case being the Kingsclere St. Mary marriage register which commenced on 27th May 1777, I do have the earlier ones from 1682 but they are even harder to read and will keep them for later (much much later at my rate of typing) Once I have a good batch of marriages entered I'll start on baptisms for the same period so gradually build up the overall picture of 'Kingsclere Families' Then hopefully I'll be able to add to my website and have fewer errors. I have yet to find a way of ensuring the right Elizabeth, Mary or Sarah etc. in a family (like the Smiths or Sewards or Rabbits) where there are several possible candidates for any given marriage gets matched to the right husband!! -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Mandrake GNU/Linux 8.0 and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

Thanks for your informative reply. I was not aware that Greywell was unlicensed for example. It may explain why I've not be able to trace some of my Barker ancestors. I do note place of residence in my records but will now have to change the place of marriage. After Ecchinswell became a parish in its own right the problem goes away tho' even then I'm not sure if marriages were performed at Sidmonton. Would baptisms have been done in the Chapelries or did people still have to travel to 'clere? -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Mandrake GNU/Linux 8.0 and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

    1. Re: Where did they marry?
    2. Alan McGowan
    3. John, I think it likely that the marriages took place at the parish church, St Mary Kingsclere. This would almost certainly have been the case for any marriages after 1753. When Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act came into effect in 1754, marriages at several Hampshire churches ceased, because those churches were not licensed for marriage. This happened at Southampton St Mary Extra, Greywell, Woodcott, Ryde (Isle of Wight), and Winchester Cathedral. Marriages at Winchester Cathedral did not re-start until 1869. Greywell couples travelled to Odiham to marry. St Mary Extra couples travelled to Southampton St Mary to marry. Marriages at Holybourne ceased earlier. From 1743 to 1823, Holybourne couples married at Alton. In my opinion, you should enter the place of marriage as St Mary Kingsclere in all cases. This directs the researcher to the correct register, and it is likely that the marriage did take place there. Any information about place of residence (e.g. "of Ecchinswell") is presumably included in your transcript of the entry. Wife-Rebecca Boshier Lawrence born Heckfield, Hampshire. son Cecil seven months. I know they had another son Eric Lawrence born later. I would like to hear from anyone researching the surnames Lawrence or Boshier. Thank you, Patricia (Pat)

    2. John Lewis
    3. Hi All I have been transcribing marriages from the Kingsclere fiche into my database and and as you will know the Kingsclere St. Mary registers also include the events for Ecchinswell (St. Lawrence) and Sidmonton (St. Mary) for quite a long period. I have been entering place of marriage for people living in Ecchinswell or Sidmonton as being either St. Lawrence, Ecchinswell or St. Mary, Sidmonton but wonder what other people do. It makes sense that they would get married in the local church rather than make the two mile trip to Kingsclere but what did really happen. Do all you experts out there have any thoughts on this matter? ************************************************************** Incidentally came across a 'funny' entry which could perhaps solve someone's 'missing person' problem. The register entry (#171) dated 26 Dec 1789 has Robert StEVENS of the parish of Itchinswell, bachelor & Ann GREEN of the same, spinster married in this church by banns. Robert makes his mark but Ann signs 'Ann Girgg', both witnesses are clearly GRIGG (Stephen and Mary). The Banns entry (#145) also has Ann GREEN and this seems to be written by a different person than whoever wrote the rest of the entry. For now at least I am going to call her Ann Grigg. -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Mandrake GNU/Linux 8.0 and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

    3. Hi Barbara The stables are Park House, still there today. Seven Derby winners - Blue Gown 1868, St Blaise 1883, Ormonde 1886, Sainfoin 1890, Common 1891 and Flying Fox 1899. The most famous horse was Mill Reef which really put Kingsclere on the map. There is a statue of him at Park House. The Queen has had horses trained at Park House including Mill Reef's colt Landmark. I will put more about Park House on the Kingsclere site after I have finished the page being prepared now about the Workhouse.
