I'd like to say a big thank you to all in Kingsclere who made today such an enjoyable experience. For me is was great to meet for the very first time people I am probably related to. In one instance I was showing someone with Hunt connections some of my family photos and he said 'I think I have those same photos at home' It looks as though he could be a grandson of the Samuel Hunt who married my great Aunt Sarah Ann Cooper late in life after his first wife died. In another the people were linked to the Smith family into which my Gt Aunt Alice, wife of Seth Cooper, was born. Even my wife had an interesting day as she met someone she has coresponded with for some time about her Dorset connections. I saw Barbara also and she assures me I'll have no problems keeping all you lovely people on the straight and narrow until she gets back from her hols ;-) -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Mandrake GNU/Linux 8.0 and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

Hello All, Here is a warning about a virus hoax. I am posting the warning to the list because it has been reported via another list and because I have been sent the hoax myself. Any replies to me privately please, and not to the list. The hoax urges you to delete a file which is actually the "Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java". Although it is possible for the file to be infected by a virus, it is the subject of the hoax. The wording of the hoax may vary, but it will always refer to a file called JDBGMGR.EXE Some versions of the hoax misreport the name of this file as JDBMGR.EXE or JBDGMGR.EXE. More details at: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/jdbgmgr.html Don't forget to keep the AntiVirus Protection up to-date and do a weekly BACKUP for your computer files. If you have McAfee AntiVirus protection their updates usually come out every Wednesday. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW, THEY MAY HAVE THE VIRUS AND MAY NOT KNOW IT. ASK WHO EVER SENT THE ATTACHMENT "WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT" PLAY SAFE. Best wishes Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk

Hello All, I found this write-up from Jim, he wrote it in 1999, I kept in my Interesting Items file, I thought you would like to read. I hope this is OK with you Jim. From: Jim.Bates@bbs.tardis.net Hullo all, A friend has found in the Court Rolls for the Manor of Kingsclere Lordship a couple of my forebears in the Homage (which he says is the then equivalent to a Jury). Because I have one or two members of this family by reason of common Christian names e.g. James and Richard that could into these positions does anybody know how these Homage members were selected, and what would position would they have to hold in the community of those times? Top of the document; The Court Baron of the most noble Harry Duke of Bolton there held the twenty-seventh day of June in the twenty-ninth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the second and in the Year of our Lord 1755. Steward was Morgan Keene, Gentleman. Bailiff was Abraham Lawrence. The Homage was made up with James Holden; Abraham Lawrence; James Bates Thomas Hawkins; Richard Bates; John Dyer. Now most of the dispositions made by the Homage consist of one or two lines. I will only quote where surnames appear. "We present and continue Wm Appleton and Stephen Wise to be Haywards for the year ensuing". "We present the death of Mrs Mary Serle and that a Heriot and Relief are due to the Lord of this Manor". "We present the death of Francis Hyde Esq and that Mrs Catherine Hyde and his sister is next taker and that a Heriot and Relief are due to the Lord of the Manor". We present the death of Thomas Pyror Gentleman and that Mr Thomas Pryor his son is next taker and that Heriots and Reliefs are due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present an alienation from Edmund Bramston Esq to Mr Joseph Portal and that a Relief is due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present an Alienation from Richard Gaffis to William Appleton and that a Relief is due to the Lord of the Manor". "We present Thomas Skeats to be Tythingman for the Lordship Tything for the year ensuing". Thomas Holding & Abraham Lawrence Affeerers Sworn and do Affeer the Americaments as set. I hope that some of these names are of use to somebody? from that Fawkesian repro-bates Jim. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30

WE are holding a Heritage Exhibition in the Village on 11/12th May. I would like to produce a flyer about Surnames that are being researched in the hope of "capturing" older members of the Village who do not have internet access or are unaware that people are researching their families. If you would like to be included please email me details of your quest. Please include Name, Town, Country and Surnames being sought plus any other information that you think might be of interest. If I get any positive feed back from visitors to the exhibition I will email their details back to you. Hello Keith & All Description The British Isles Vital Records Index (Second Edition) on compact disc contains information from birth, christening, and marriage records from selected parishes and other sources in the British Isles. The records are from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man. This set of compact discs update and includes the previously released British Isles Vital Records Index File. The British Isles Vital Records Index (Second Edition) includes: Records that cover an approximate time period from 1538 to 1906. Approximately 12.3 million people of 16 compact discs, plus the Family History Recourse File Viewer disc needed to view the information. The names of the individual; the parents' names and when available, the date and place where the birth, christening, or marriage was registered; the name of the individual's spouse. Reference information that allows you to locate the original record on a microfilm. Other features of the program include a parent search, bookmarking, print options, and a GEDCOM export. A collection search allows you to view other records from the same locality or from multiple localities. Please note that this collection does not contain all available records from the time period or from all these places. Your ancestor may not appear there even though you know he or she lived in a time and place covered by the index. Some names found in the Vital Records Index may also be found of the International Genealogical Index (IGI), produced by the Church. Records have be transcribed more completely from some counties than from others. The more records that have been transcribed from a county, the great your chance may be of finding your ancestor.
