    3. Sent: 23 July 2002 19:19 1901 Online service: Latest statement from the PRO "Unfortunately we still cannot give a firm date when the 1901 Census Online Service will be fully functional. However, QinetiQ, who are responsible for setting up the site and providing the online service, have continued to make technical improvements to it. QinetiQ have been testing the site and the Public Record Office has also carried out its own independent test programme. Now these tests are completed, we are planning to move to a phase of testing of the online service by public users. Details of this will be available shortly. We hope to complete this public testing phase by mid to late August. However, the nature of testing is such that it throws up issues that need to be addressed, and sometimes requires tests to be re-done. This could happen in the public testing phase so it will still not be possible to give a firm date for general Internet access until the public testing phase has been completed and fully evaluated. We do realise that the lack of a precise timetable has caused much frustration to our customers, frustration which we share, and for which we apologise. We want to ensure that, when the 1901 Online Census is re-launched on the Internet, it successfully handles the initial demand, which we expect will again be extremely high, and provides a consistently reliable service to users. We are committed to expanding online access to our most popular records and are continuing with our other online projects." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ So folks there is still hope, so don't give up on it yet. I cannot check to see if he married Myra Elizabeth as I am waiting for the fiche containing marriages of that period from RO. Daniel and Ann were living in The Dell. They married at St. Paul, Woodlands on 10 Oct 1858 and had seven children. Daniel's father was a William Smith and therein lies the problem - just too many William Smiths to be able to decide which one at the moment. One of my reason for going to RO today was to collect Smith baptisms from the transcripts of the early parish rgisters which are very hard to read in fiche format. Myra Elizabeth Aldridge was baptised at St. Mary, Kingsclere on 13 Oct 1867 (margin note has her born Aug 19th) to Alfred and Mary Ann (Simpson). Alfred and Mary Ann were married at St. Mary 23 Aug 1866 and seem to have had only one other child Kate bapt. 21 Mar 1869. Alfred was born in Workhouse Lane, Kingsclere on 18 May 1840, bapt. St. Mary on 26 Jul 1840 to Henry and Mary Ann (Girdler) Mary Ann Simpson is likely to be Mary bapt 30 Aug 1846 to Charles and Louisa (Poulter) Hope this helps. I will keep looking for parents of Thomas Smith but may not be able sort out who is his father until I can see the marriage entry. -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

All are in the district of Kingsclere when they first appear on my tree. WOODHOUSE. Do you have an Elizabeth that might have married a William WOODHOUSE abt 1834. NEW. Do you have a Josua NEW b abt 1798, he maybe known as Jesse. JEWELL. I am searching for any information on the father of Jonathon b 1749 to Elizabeth JEWELL. his name was Francis LAWRENCE, the only things I know about him is that in 1748 he was living or working in Beenham, Berks. SMITH. Ann b abt 1738 m 1781 to Jonathon. CUMMINS Jane m Isaac WOODHOUSE 1792. This is a new one for me. Another lister was able to help me sort out my tree that had very twisted roots due to the habit of everyone calling their sons by the same names. I hope you may be able to help me break down a few brick walls. all the best, Carol.

    3. Hi Barbara, I haven't found anyone on the Hants Allegations for Marriage Licence yet, but that doesn't mean I won't later. You definitely aren't wasting your time because, as far as I know, these lists are archived - so we all have access to them long after the date they are posted. So please keep up the good work! It's great to hear that so many people are researching Kingsclere. I have a query in regard to that district:- does Bramley in Hants come under Kingsclere? If so I will post my Bramley surname interests soon. I will also be in touch with Peter and John at the earliest opportunity. 3. Hello Candy, Thank you for your message. Please post your Bramley, Hants interests to the Kingsclere list. I come from Guildford, Surrey and just outside of Guildford there is the village of Bramley where my ancestors come from. I found this very confusing when I first came to live in Basingstoke, when people spoke about Bramley, to think that there was another Bramley here in Hampshire. 3. 1901 Online service Latest statement from the PRO 1 July 2002: Update. The Public Record Office apologises for how long the testing has been taking. We are aware that six months have passed since 1901 Census Online was first launched. Both the PRO and QinetiQ Ltd, who are responsible for the technical aspects of the service, are testing the system. The nature of testing is such that it throws up issues that need to be addressed, and on occasion requires tests to be re-done. The primary objective is to ensure that the website is sufficiently robust, so that our customers can have a satisfactory experience when they use it. This has meant that we cannot give precise dates for the return of the service and we do not want to raise expectations by giving deadlines that are not met. We are aware that this has caused much frustration to our customers, frustration which we share, and for which we apologise. The PRO is committed to creating online access to our most popular records and we are continuing with our other projects. Regards Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk
