    1. The TAYLOR Family
    2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. Hello Eric Gibson and Brian Marron, I see from Peter Goff's website that you are also researching the TAYLOR family, this is what I have on my family tree:- James TAYLOR married to Sarah XXX their daughter Sarah TAYLOR married John HOLLY 12 October 1791 Kingsclere they had 4 children. Helen Anderson has written to me and this is her connection to the Taylor family tree:- I noticed that you are interested in the TAYLOR family and wonder if you know of a Ellen TAYLOR born 1841 who married Charles SADLER in Wokingham, Berks in 1861. Any info. that you may have would be very welcome. Can you add anything to our family trees to link them together, John Lewis would be delighted to have a piece of the Kingsclere puzzle that fitted to-gether. Many thanks. 2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. Hello All, Once again I would like to tell you that there is a book entitled "Kingsclere Woodlands Story". The History of the Parish of Ashford Hill with Headley, the book is written by Gary Cusworth and Roger Dobbs, it is a paper back and quite a thick book. The book is well worth having, you the Listers ask me questions about Kingsclere the Farms, places and people, I often use this well written informative book as a reference book, there are lots of picture showing houses, churches, people, maps etc. You can order the from book shops in the UK using the reference ISBN 0 953 7778-0-4 cost about £10.00 and worth every penny. If you go onto www.Amazonbook.uk they will also order this book for you, if you have any problems ordering this book please let me know. 3. Hello All Ann Sargeant sent me a transcription of the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1586 and the Hearth Tax Assessment of 1665 for Kingsclere. I have now put these on the Kingsclere web site www.kingsclere.org.uk I converted the Lay Subsidy Rolls from Ann's file to HTML by using Word. Unfortunately the columns do not lineup perfectly. Any 'experts' out there who can suggest an easy solution without having to re-type the whole thing into a table. 1. 1901 Census Update
    2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. From PRO Site dated 1st August Unfortunately we still cannot give a firm date when the 1901 Census Online Service will be fully functional. However, QinetiQ, who are responsible for setting up the site and providing the online service, have continued to make technical improvements to it. QinetiQ have been testing the site and the Public Record Office has also carried out its own independent test programme. Now these tests are completed, we are planning to move to a phase of testing of the online service by public users. Details of this will be available shortly. We hope to complete this public testing phase by mid to late August. Regards Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk Listowner

A Miller at East Stoke, Dorset with wife Alice W ? and servant Emily RAMPTON 17 also born Kingsclere. I don't have any Chance at the moment. 1. Chance Family
    2. Linnell, Tim
    3. I'm looking for help with my researches relating to the Chance family, who held the Kingsclere General Store up until about 1957. One Edward Chance (1782-1847) was the brother-in-law of the painter John Linnell, my great great great grandfather, and held the General Store from the 1830s, I believe. His descendants continued in the store, ending with two brothers, Charles and John Linnell Chance who died in the 1950s, whereupon the ownership passed to Captain and Mrs Dunn (Mrs Dunn being a descendant of Edward Chance, and grand-daughter of the Victorian surgeon, Edward John Chance). Other Chances married into the Bradfield family of millers. I think I have a fairly complete genealogical record of the Chance family at Kingsclere and elsewhere up to the 1970s, and the Bradfield family up until the present day, though will gladly receive any 'dates' information anyone else has. I do also have some other material, including a 1970s article on the Chance General Store from the local paper. However I'd very much like to flesh out the names on the family tree with anecdotal information, and try and find any photographs or other archive information relating to the Chances. And so I was wondering whether anyone on the list could suggest anything, or put me in touch with anyone else that might have known the Chances or the Dunns. I believe the Chance brothers were notably eccentric, and I hope this has left them marked in someone's memory! I have been in touch with Peter Goff - who suggested this mailing list as a potential source of information, and have written to Mike Leah, who I believe is an expert on local history. However any other further suggestions would be of enormous interest. I'll be happy to send phone and postal contact details via private e-mail, which may then be passed onto anyone not having e-mail that may want to get in contact. Incidentally, it may possibly be of interest to know that a great deal of information on the Chance family in Kingsclere is held in the enormous Linnell family archive at the Fitzwilliam museum. If you have Internet access, you can find an on-line index at the Fitzwilliam web site - one easy route to this is via the links to John Linnell the artist on my own site www.linnells.org.uk Thanks, and best wishes Tim Linnell
