    1. 1861 Census for the Kingcslere areas
    2. Candy Bridge
    3. Dear Barbara, I would be interested to receive details of any TULL's on the 1861 Kingsclere census, especially my Joseph TULL who would have been about 70 years old. Elizabeth his wife (aged about 53) would be with him too. They were in Tadley on the 1851 census, however Joseph's death was registered in Kingsclere in 1872. Thanks in advance. 3. Kelly's Directory 1931 lists the landlord as Mark Bennett. Kelly's 1889 does not list the Bolton Arms, but lists George Thumwood as a Beer Retailer in Kingsclere. Kelly's Directories continued until 1939. Quarter Sessions records at Hampshire Record Office include records of licensing of public houses. 3. Hi Steven The only information I have at present is: "The Bolton Arms had George Thumbwood as its landlord in 1871 and he was still there in 1890. By 1920 Mark Bennett was in residence and Daniel Hussey stayed until the public house closed. He was a keen gardener winning prizes at the flower show and an advertisement described the Bolton Arms as being noted for its gardens. The house is now number 46 Swan Street." I will try and find out more information if it is available, there may be records of the licensing hearings at Hampshire Record Office one never knows. Hi Margaret Sorry I have been a bit tardy in replying to your message to me, but haven't had a chance to look at these Miles names for you. The variants in spelling of Miles (Mials Myhills Myles to list but a few) means researching this family is full of problems. The way the name is spelt seems to depend on the whim of the Parish Clerk or Curate or whoever entered details in the registers, add to this variations in the way the owners of the name pronounced it and you have plenty of scope for errors. In my own research I tend to standardise on the modern variant of the name, in this case Miles but use the surname alias feature of my genie program to note the variations as they arise through the generations or even in children of the same family. So to answer your question those Mills you have been looking for could easily be Miles in early generations but adopted the name Mills when they could sign the registers rather than making a mark. -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

Letty married Clement Hawkins on > 28 May 1825 in Kingsclere, HAM, ENG. Clement was > christened on 10 Nov 1799 in Kingsclere, HAM, I think there is an error here which was pointed out to me by some time ago by Phil Hawkins. The date given for birth of Letty (or Letitia) conflicts with other data such as her age at death. A Letty Hawkins of Ashford Hill was buried at St. Paul, Woodlands on 9 Mar 1881. The register entry gives age as 76 which gives an approx d.o.b. of 1805. Clement Hawkins was the son of Clement Hawkins and Elizabeth Sandum. He was listed in 1881 census as a widower age 81 living Ashford Hill. The marriage records her as Letty. The Letty Miles bapt on 1 Feb 1789, dau of William Miles and Mary (Withers) is, I believe, the Letty who died Feb 1789 and was buried at St. Mary, Kingsclere on 12th Feb. The Letty who married Clement is probably the illegitimate dau of Elizabeth Chapman of Kingsclere Common (ie Woodlands) and baptised as Letitia on 3 Jun 1804. -- John Lewis <jayell@ntlworld.com> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: Vale of Glamorgan: GRIFFITH Rumney: LEWIS Aberdare: HOPKINS & JENKINS and CMN: HOPKINS & DAVIES

    3. Hello All, I found this in the 1861 Census for Kingsclere, Hampshire William BRADLEY unmarried age 17 Jockey born Epsom, Surrey. Why was he was living in Kingsclere? as they had Race Horse Stables in Kingsclere, they raced at Newbury Race Course. If you would like to know about Racing in the 1800s go to www.kingsclere.org.uk go to What's New, then go to Park House and read all about it.
