Dear Listers, I understand there is someone there researching the family HUNT My husbands GGGFather was William Hunt born 1834 Eastern Cape, South Africa. d 22/5/1927 buried Grahamstown. m to Elizabeth Jane b 1848 , 17/8/1921 also Grahamstown. and I have the family from then to now. We were always told that they were 1820 settlers to the Cape, but realise now that they were descendents of settlers. We have no further information and knowing that he was British are keen to find out any further details. I am trying to find out where he was baptised (all his children were in Grahamstown Catholic church) and hopefully then will find out his parents names. has anyone got a pair who came out to south Africa in 1820? 2. Peter Goff
    3. Hello All Here is some information about a small utility that you run in Excel to sort data extracted from the PRO Census site into family groups. I have tried it and it works. Unfortunately it only came to my notice after I had done the same thing by hand with 2500 Goff's. I quote .............. "For the benefit of those list members who have not seen the free items below, they are very useful. 1901 Census Extractor @ http://www.leedsindexers.co.uk/Internet_Tools.htm#1901Extractor Census Extractor provides a 'pro forma' Microsoft Excel set of sheets complete with macros. What you do is simply select and copy your 1901 search results and paste them directly into the Census Extractor data sheet provided. One of the macros will enable you to then extract the unique Page ID number and the Person ID number for each of the listed search responses. A second macro' will estimate and list the piece and folio numbers. In practice I have found the folio numbers to be accurate to within '+' or '-' one folio. By sorting the Page and Person ID no's it is possible to workout family units. 1901 Census GuessTimator @ http://www.leedsindexers.co.uk/Internet_Tools.htm#GuessTimator This is actually a tiny programme. What you get is a little box in which you enter the 'unique' Page ID number that is revealed in the lower bar of the 1901 search results window which is easily accessed by allowing your cursor to 'hang' over the 'image icons'. Census GuessTimator will then produce a Piece and Folio number as above." 1. KING - Burghfield
    2. John Lewis
    3. Having looked at the wills of John Foster, father and son, I need to add another name to my ever growing list of family names, that of KING. John Foster snr. had a daughter Ann(e) born about Oct 1799 in Kingsclere. In his will he leaves £1000 to his daughter Anne King. John Foster jnr. in a codicil refers to 'Mrs King my first wife's mother in law' In 1793 a John Foster marries Sarah King in Thatcham. A Sarah King is baptised in Burghfield in 1768. John Foster jnr's first wife is Sarah ? (his second wife is also Sarah but I know about her as she is my 2xgt-grandmother) The dates of Sarah K's baptism, the marriage and date of first child of John and Sarah all suggest there is a link. what would help confirm this would be names of Sarah's parents, if they are X and Ann(e) it could be that he married a cousin. I know about a Sarah King who was born in Kingsclere in 1773 but while this Sarah's mother was not Ann she is a possiblity. So if anyone has access to Burghfield parish registers and could look her up it will be a big help. In the meantime I am going to be looking at Kingsclere fiche for any Kings. Any info on the Thatcham marriage such as witnesses could be useful as well. --- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, SMITH Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: GRIFFITH, HOPKINS, JENKINS, LEWIS. 3. Hi All, I am looking for information on one William Smallbone Hussey. On the 1851 Census William and Mary Hussey were living at Ecchinswell with five of their children. William said he was born in 1812 at Tilehurst in Berkshire found a baptism for him there to William and Sarah Hussey.William (Snr) said he was born in 11783 at Beenham in Berkshire. The only William Hussey baptised anywhere around that time was William Smallbone Hussey the illegitimate son of Martha Hussey. There was also a baptism a bit further down the following year for a James Smallbone Hussey the illegitimate son of Ann Hussey. I assume Ann and Martha were sisters though I have been unable to find where they come from. Can anyone help?

    1. 1901 Census
    2. Colin Harris
    3. Hello All Something that may assist some of you in making sense of the search results you obtain from the 1901 census. I'm not sure if it will work for you but what I do is 1. Copy the whole web page to the clipboard and then paste it into an Excel spreadsheet, I carry on copying all the pages until I have the lot, the limit on the search seems to be 300 hits as far as I can tell so you may need to be imaginative in your searches if you get too many. 2.I then tidy up the formatting and delete all the extraneous rubbish that has been copied, you should end up with a blank column headed "Image" as the first column. 3. Now the clever bit, in Excel (don't know if this works in other programs) you hover the mouse over the persons name and up pops the URL for that persons record, the last part of which is a unique numeric identifier which I then type into the "Image" column. Once they are all typed in it is just a question of sorting on the first column and they will then be in family group order. Of course you don't know the relationships but in most cases they should be obvious. I think it may be possible to refine this even further by using the advanced person search but I haven't investigated this yet, I do know that advanced searches allow you to look for Heads and Wives so it should not be too difficult to include this information as well in the spread sheet. This came from a tip that I think Guy Etchell's posted on one of the other lists. Feel free to pass this on to others as you see fit. I found family members who I did not know existed, ie born after 1891 and also an adopted Gt Uncle who had been a mystery for ages. It all works OK but tends to give a "page not found" occassionally. 3. Hello All, News from the Federation of Family History Societies "WELCOME TO THE 1901 CENSUS WEBSITE Test Site The 1901 Census Online service is currently running as a test site. During this period the service will be available 09.00 to 19.00 hours (GMT+1 hour) Monday to Saturday. We are conducting this test phase in order to undertake detailed monitoring and further optimise the site settings to ensure a good user experience for the high levels of demand we expect when we launch the live service. Users have asked for an indication of how their searches are progressing, and in response, a queuing mechanism is now provided, allowing you to see where you are in the queue for search results. To permit more users to access the database and maximise throughput during early days of operation, users are being limited to 2 hours of continuous use. At least one operation (such as a search, display of search details or image download) must be conducted every 15 minutes to stay active on the system, but note that accessing the Help pages is not classed as an activity for this purpose."
