    3. Hello All, I have put Patricia's message on the list for other SMITH researchers to read. Please put all replies on the list, many thanks. Barbara. ----- Original Message ----- From: Don and Patricia Earl To: BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 11:50 PM Subject: Smith Family of Kingsclere Hello Barbara! I notice that you are researching two Smith families from Kingsclere. I'm afraid I don't have much information on MY Smith line, but there's always hope. Here's what I have: Hannah Smith, born Kingsclere about 1774, married George Vince at Kingsclere 31 October 1797. They had at least four children: James 1805, John 1808, Charles 1810, Hannah 1812. I am descended from John. Does anything sound familiar? Thanks, and good luck to you! Patricia (Vince) Earl

    3. Hi All The virus which you may have recently received may have come via my own computer even though I updated my virus definitions on Monday evening on return from a short holiday! It has taken the best part of two hours to make my machine virus free as one of the insidious things this virus does is to disable the virus checker. As it has its own SMTP engine you won't see the infected messages being sent they will just go out whenever you are on line. Just to be doubly safe - when you delete infected messages use the key combination Shift+Delete and not Caps Lock+Delete -- Best regards, Peter McNulty peter@sparshott.org.uk www.sparshott.org.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Goff" <peter.goff@btinternet.com> To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-KINGSCLERE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 01, 2002 7:24 PM Subject: Another virus > Hello All > > Just had a web site sparshot.org.uk send me an email subject THE POT which had an attachment with a virus. 1. Virus Attachments
    2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. Hello All, This may explain some of the strange emails you are getting. The new Bugbear virus works in a similar way to Badtrans but is more devious in the way it propagates itself. It selects two email addresses in the infected computer from either the address book or from old emails stored in the computer. It forges the sender's address using one of these addresses and sends itself to the other. It uses the Blind Copy field instead of using the To address so it is not always obvious that it has been sent to you. When you receive a copy of the virus it has NOT been sent to you by the person it claims to be from. There is no point in accusing them, the infected computer is elsewhere. Listowners cannot discover which computers are infected so each individual must take their own precautions. Unsubscribing from mailing lists will not protect you, if your email address or a message sent by you is stored in any other computer then you are at risk. For more information see your Anti-Virus provider's website. If you don't have an AV program then you should not be using email. Here are the addresses of some websites with information: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32bugbeara.html http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/Virus.asp?ID=13233 http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,562163,00.asp New variants of new viruses are often discovered as infections become more widespread. Updates to AV definitions will gradually be added and you should download the latest definitions every time you go on-line. If your computer is already infected you may not be able to access these websites as one of the effects of the virus is to block access to them. If this is the case get expert advice and do not use email again until your computer is guaranteed clean. As you could be the first victim of any new variant you should also take every other precaution you can. Bugbear has a worm element which can be executed just by viewing the infected email in the preview pane. Microsoft issued patches to prevent this years ago but many people have not installed them. As Bugbear exploits loopholes in Microsoft systems you must make sure that you have the latest updates installed which protect against such viruses starting up without you having opened the attachment. See: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ The current Bugbear attachments are about 70K in size. In Outlook Express you can add the Size field to the View which shows you details about your messages. The same should be true for other email programs. The most common subject lines for messages infected with the Bugbear virus are those that appear to be replies to mailing list messages but this is not exclusively so. Bugbear is usually taking a subject line from an email in the infected computer and supposedly replying to that but it also has a stock of ready-made subject lines which it might use. It only appears that it is mostly answering RootsWeb list messages because that is what most of us mainly have in our computers. It remains the case than you CANNOT receive a virus from a RootsWeb mailing list. RootsWeb do not allow attachments or HTML and there is a size limit for messages which is below the size of harmful viruses. These three factors all prevent viruses from getting through RootsWeb mailing lists, the same cannot be guaranteed for all mailing lists hosted by other organisations. To delete these Attachments and unwanted emails, just press the CAP LOCK key and the DELETE key at the same time, by deleting Virus attachments and unwanted messages this way, it deletes them from the computer system, where they are harmless. Regards Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk Listowner Remember, NEVER open attachments unless you know EXACTLY what they contain. 3. Hello All, Roger my spouse has just had a Virus attachment sent to him. The subject line made it look as if the attachment was sent from a rootsweb mailing list to his INBOX, this was a fake. Rootsweb DO NOT send attachments, and cannot send them. Please do not get caught by opening these attachments. Virus sender will use every trick that they can to get you to open these attachments. If you do open an attachment, the Virus will go through your address book and then send the Virus on to all of the people listed in your address book, even to your own family. The Virus will also wipe out all of your files, this is why I ask you to do a BACKUP of your computer files at least once a week. To delete an attachment from you computer press down Caps lock and delete. Regards Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk Listowner

    1. The VIRUS is back again
    2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. Hello All, A new virus has appeared today. It appears to be spreading quickly so I am posting this warning. The virus is W32/Bugbear-A Preliminary description at: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32bugbeara.html and other vendor sites It was identified today, so you will need to have the *very latest* virus identities/library from your anti-virus software vendor. The infected messages look very genuine. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS, unless the sender has asked you first if they may send the attachment to you, even if they are a relation, they may have the Virus, you are in their address book. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY ATTACHMENTS, unless the person to whom it is are going says it is OK to send it. Make sure that you have Anti-Virus software, if you have not got Anti-Virus protection, there is a free programme available until you get a proper Anti-Virus system installed, try www.grisoft.com . Most important, please do a weekly BACKUP this could save your family tree and other files. Take care of your computer, it does a good job for you. Kind regards Barbara Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants, UK BarbaraMallyon@lewmal.co.uk Listowner .

    3. Can anyone help me with a couple of Burials please. William EDWARDS died 6 October 1900 at Poor Cottages, Wolverton aged 83 years - his wife Joanna is on the 1901 Census living in Wolverton aged 83 years. I am just guessing that perhaps Joanna did not live many more years. Is there someone out there who could supply me with the Burial dates of William and Joanna presumably at Wolverton. I am hoping on my next visit to the F.H.C., London to now look at the Death Indexes for Joanna. I have looked at Kingsclere Registers under Burials and neither William or Joanna are there. By the way - am I doing something wrong with the 1901 Census On Line Test but have others found that BERKSHIRE has not been put on the Test Site. My ancestors moved from Hampshire into Berkshire but they are not on the Hampshire Lists. My cousin in Australia is supplying me with some of the families found using Excel but of course there are no references.
