Does anyone else have PARSONS or BOOTH in their family? Firstly I am looking for parents of PETER PARSONS. The background here is that John Foster, senior (of Waits Farm) mentions his daughter Sarah Parsons in his will and leaves her the sum of one shilling, the assumption being he had already made provision for when she married. I cannot find where or when she married but I have found children being baptised to Peter and Sarah Parsons, variously in Sidmonton or North Sidmonton betweem 1796 and 1811. I can find no burials for these two in the Hampshire Burials Index. The surprising thing is that Peter is described as a labourer at baptism of at least one child, if Sarah had received the same dowry as her sister Anne KING £1000 (worth over £40,000 in todays currency) she should have been comfortably off. To confuse things John Foster, junior (of Old Farm) also has a dau Sarah who marries a Peter Parsons in 1813, both being minors and marrying with consent of parents. I think this Peter is a son of William Parsons (a Maltser) and Mary Rolfe, baptised Jan 1783 Ecchinswell. In his will John Foster jnr. names his executors as William BOOTH of Echinswell, William PARSONS of Folly Farm, Exmansford and John PRISMALL also of Exmansford so it seems likely that either William, father of Peter or his brother William are William the executor. A William BOOTH had married John jnr's sister Deborah but he is another I cannot find a baptism for. Joshua BOOTH married Mary PARSONS on 10 April 1793, witnesses being William PARSONS and Hannah PARSONS. I am guessing William is the one who married Mary Rolfe but where were they born/baptised and who were their parents? Both Parsons and Booth families were in Ecchinswell/Sidmonton for many years, the earliest Parsons being Alexander born ca 1700 and the earliest Booth being Joshua's father John born ca 1710 but I cannot work out continous lines of descent for either family. Both names feature in other local villages but I cannot link them with the Ecchinswell ones. So is there someone out there with info I haven't yet found. John PRISMALL took over the tenancy of Old Farm at Ashford Hill after John Foster's death and his family is one of those I do have a far amount of detail for. The Booths and Prismalls are inter-related by marriage in two separate generations. I am trying to increase the number of 5th cousins of my Mother in Kingsclere, the total currently stands at 105 <grin> --- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, SMITH Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: GRIFFITH, HOPKINS, JENKINS, LEWIS. Hello Colin The marriage took place at St. Mary Kingsclere on 13 Nov 1869 (register entry 428) witnesses were William & Harriet Woodhouse. Both Joseph and Alice were residing in Kingsclere and their parents were Emmanuel Wooff and William Girdler, both labourers. Joseph said to be aged 19 years and Alice 22 years, both previously unmarried. The age for Alice is about right as I have her baptised on 26 Mar 1848 at St. Paul, Woodlands. Only problem is I cannot find a baptism for Joseph. There are baptisms for Emmanuel and Elizabeth Woolf from 1833 onwards, Priscilla 1833, David 1835, Sylvia 1841, Emmanuel 1843, Charles 1844, Jane 1845, John 1848, Sarah Ann 1849 and Julia 1853. Emmanuel lived in the Headley Common area and children from John onwards were baptised at St. Paul, Woodlands. The St Paul entries have surname as WOLF Sarah Ann was bapt Oct 1849 and Julia Dec 1853 so there is the possibilty that James _was_ born between these two. I cannot find a marriage for Emmanuel & Elizabeth nor a baptism for Emmanuel in Kingsclere. I do have William & Elizabeth Wooff living at Fair Oak who baptised two children at St. Mary, Thomas in 1816 and Henry in 1819 who could possibly be the parents of Emmanuel. I will have to look in the other Bishops Transcripts I have to see if I can find any Wooffs elsewhere. Finally I have a note that a Joseph Wooff, maltster of Kingsclere has a will listed for 1795 so another possible parent/ancestor of Emmanuel. --- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, SMITH Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: GRIFFITH, HOPKINS, JENKINS, LEWIS. Happy New Year to you all. In the last few days I have made contact with a granddaughter of my paternal grandmother's brother Alfred GURDLER, this is most exciting as until this contact I knew little about my grandmother's siblings; my grandmother died when my father was only four years old and he did not really know much about his GURDLER relatives. In the course of exchanging information it has come to light that my new cousin's husband's family have been traced back to Kingsclere, I don't have all the details yet but one of the names that appears is WOOFF and I have a note of a marriage of a Joseph WOOFF to an Alice GIRDLER in November 1869 in Kingsclere. Can anyone lay claim to this Joseph, as so far I have been unable to discover his origins? The couple do not seem to appear in the 1881 census, assuming them to be still in the country, I have tried a number of variations on the name WOOFF but no luck so far. Hello All Another mailing list I belong to pointed me in the direction of a site which has searchable images of various commercial directories as follows:- ========================================= WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ This is a most fabulous site, one of the best online resources I have seen for a while. It is a library of historical directories, hosted by the University of Leicester. Drawing on the institutions obvious expertise in putting documents on line the site is marvellously easy to use, if a little slow, perhaps because of its expected market of institutional users. The site contains copies of historical directories from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from all over the UK. What makes this site even more exceptional is the wonderful search mechanism. Type in a name, or a place and it will show you the results. Click on one particular result and the search mechanism will take you to the page, and highlight the entry. If all search mechanism's were this good we would be all saved a lot of effort! A truly fantastic resource that I hope will expand to include more directories in time. ================================================= I have tried this site out by searching for Surnames and also place names with some success discovering the whereabouts of some of my ancestors in the early 1800's The Kingsclere Directory entry for 1844 will be appearing on the web site soon. Hope you all have a happy Christmas and successfull searching in the New Year Regards and Best Wishes Peter Goff Kingsclere, Hampshire, UK www.kingsclere.org.uk All outgoing e-mails are scanned for viruses before despatch. WISHING EVERYONE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS especially all the contacts I have made through the Website especially those connected to our lineage. Many thanks to Barbara, especially with all her up to date Bulletins that have been of great interest and those throughout the year concerning the ongoing saga of the 1901 Census and the recent news re the increase in price of Certs. Helps a great deal to know and be aware of these things so that one can plan ahead - many, many thanks Barbara. Would love to have put my Waving Father Christmas on the bottom of this message but guess I would be in trouble if I did - so you will just have to imagine him waving his Greetings to you all. Hello Everyone, Well, I guess it is that time of year again, the months just seem to fly lately and before you know it the children are all counting the days until santa comes. I would like to thank all of the people on the list who have helped me in some way or another throughout the year with either a look up of an entry or even local knowledge of your area, I don't know if you realise just how much help you have been. I have to say that this is the friendliest and most helpful list that I have been on and it certainly is a joy. I hope that everyone has a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Hello All, At the beginning of October Jim BATES sent me this Prayer, I thought you would like to read it. A Prayer for Genealogists by Curtis Woods. Lord, Help me dig into the past, and sift the sand of time, That I might find the roots that make, This family tree of mine. Lord, Help me trace the ancient roads, on which my father's trod, and led them through so many lands, to find our present sod! Lord, help me find an ancient book, or dusty manuscript, That's safely hidden now away, in some forgotten crypt. Lord, let it bridge the gaps that haunts, my soul when I can't find, this missing link between some name, that ends the same as mine! Have a good time, >From Jim Bates that Fawkesian reprobate, who is claiming to be descended from Thomas Bates who was hanged, drawn and quartered in the St Pauls Churchyard 1606 for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot.
