I don't know what you have on this family so I'll include all I have so far. Descendants of William Rolfe To the grandchildren. William Rolfe. Married on 27 August 1789, St. Mary, Kingsclere, to Elizabeth Rozier, with Elizabeth, born about September 1790, Kingsclere, baptized on 12 September 1790, St. Mary, Kingsclere. Samuel, born about October 1791, Kingsclere, baptized on 23 October 1791, St. Mary, Kingsclere. Joseph, born about April 1794, Kingsclere, baptized on 4 May 1794, St. Mary, Kingsclere, Shoemaker/Cordwainer. Married on 12 July 1819, St. Mary, Kingsclere, to Bethany Spurrett, born about April 1795, Kingsclere, baptized on 26 April 1795, St. Mary, Kingsclere, with Sarah Bear, born about April 1820, Headley Common, baptized on 19 April 1820, St. Mary, Kingsclere. Mary Spurrett, born on 18 October 1822, nr. Tan House, baptized on 19 January 1823, St. Mary, Kingsclere. George, born on 23 December 1824, nr. Tan House, baptized on 7 September 1825, St. Mary, Kingsclere. Married on 31 October 1846, St. Paul, Woodlands, to Hannah Aldridge, born about 1825, Woodlands. Charles, born on 21 February 1827, nr. Tan House, baptized on 4 September 1827, St. Mary, Kingsclere. Joseph, born about 1830. Married on 21 November 1853, St. Paul, Woodlands, to Charlotte Aldridge, born about February 1830, Kingsclere, baptized on 2 February 1830, St. Mary, Kingsclere. William, born about June 1796, Kingsclere, baptized on 30 June 1796, St. Mary, Kingsclere, died in April 1818, Ecchinswell, buried on 1 May 1818, St. Mary, Kingsclere (age at death: possibly 21 years old). Sarah, born about October 1798, Kingsclere, baptized on 21 October 1798, St. Mary, Kingsclere. I cannot find the baptism for Joseph, his dob is based on stated age at marriage and I have put him in Joseph & Bethany's family as he stated father to be Joseph Rolfe, shoemaker and Hannah Aldridge was one of the witnesses at the wedding. (Hannah and Charlotte Aldridge are not sisters, I'm not sure if they are directly related at present.) Now back to the point of the original question. Mary was still in Woodlands in 1846 as she was a witness at wedding of George and Hannah, _but_ none of the family are listed in Kingsclere (or surrounding Hants parishes)in the 1851 census index. I have also checked to see if they had moved across the border into Berks but could not see them in the census data I have. So it look as tho' the whole family moved away between 1846 and 1851. The only thing I haven't checked so far are burials. Is there any reason why you think there may have been marriages of the two girls in Kingsclere? -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

Hello Barbara and Helen I had Joseph & Bethany married July 1819 but no children, so this is new territory for me. I have many Rolfes in my database but in many twiglets and I haven't had time to try to make a coherent tree out of them. I will have a look for the two girls tomorrow. 3. I have just had a session on this site* and found it very useful. My 'free voucher' was out of date which was a bit of a bummer but it was easy enough to purchase a £5 credit. I have found several of my 'missing' Foster marriages/burials in Berkshire as a result. The initial search is free and you only need to pay the £0.05 per search item if it looks like there is something relevant. This does mean you pay for all items found in the search (for example it found 5 Sarah King marriages) but I still have £3.50 left for another day and you do have 6 months to use it up. * www.familyhistoryonline.net -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

    1. Savery in Kingsclere.
    2. John, Many thanks for your latest. I have some source material which may confuse things even more!! A marriage Cert. August 17 1842, Basingstoke, Joseph Savery, full age, batchelor,Shoemaker, father James Savery, Gamekeeper. Hannah Goddard, a minor, spinster, no occupation, father John Goddard, Labourer. Witnesses- Ann Edwards Savery, Henry Savery ( I assumed these to be his mother & brother, but no proof yet) Also a birth Cert of:- Ann Savery born 4/12/1843 at Kingsclere, Mother, Hannah Goddard Savery Father, Joseph Savery ( Tailor) The Registrar was Henry Dale ( for anyone researching Dale's) The references to her birth in a couple of places in Gloucestershire are confusing. Most of us manage only one birthplace!! We have a family diary recording Ann's arrival in Warwickshire at the home of her uncle Richard Savery in abt 1862. Richard was a son of James senior, and also born in Withington. I have no idea where she was between 1851 census ( the 7 yr old with grandfather & Uncle Henry?) Back to John ( b 1811) - Ann Rebecca was a daughter from a previous marriage to Rebecca Ann Emmans ( see IGI) There were still Emmans in Kingsclere in the 1851 index. Caroline was a Buckeridge. I am in contact with her gt gt grandaughter who has documentation on her. Isaac Buckeridge was the local carrier & I think Carolines father. Thanks for your help. Perhaps the above will link in with another member? Best Wishes Valerie

I know son John was. The 1851 Census Index for Kingsclere has James SAVORY age 71 born Withington, Henry 25 born Kingsclere and Ann 7 born Leasoncott?, Glos on page 159. John SAVERY 40 born Withington, Caroline 40 born Henley on Thames, Oxf., Ann Rebecca 14 and John J. 2 months both born Kingsclere are listed on page 184. I don't know the relationship of Ann Rebecca to John & Caroline but John J. seems to be a son. John & Caroline were to have another six childen bapt. in Kingsclere, he was a shoemaker and is also recorded as Parish Clerk in 1855 and Sexton in 1859. He died in 1866 in George Street and was buried at St. Mary. Caroline also died in Geroge Street in 1898. I have James senior married to Maria Poole but no note of my source for this. She presumably died before 1851. I have James junior recorded as a Gamekeeper and married to Ann EDWARDS but again I have no note of source of this info. If my info is correct and James junior was a gamekeeper it is possible James senior was also a gamekeeper as this occupation often runs in families. In which case James snr could have moved to Kingsclere to work on one of the estates (keepers tended to move around), after several years settlement in Kingsclere Parish would be established and with sons/grandsons becoming Parish Clerks who was going to move him on!! Two possible children are of James and Ann are Henry born about 1826 at North Oakley who married (1) Mary Ann POOLE and (2) Louisa BUTLER on 2 Jul 1888. Henry was a Surveyor Land Measurer and Parish Clerk when he married, witnesses were Henry Thomas SAVERY and Elizabeth Hewlett MILES. The second possible child was Joseph who was buried at St. Mary on 14 Sep 1846 age 5 months. I also have a Joseph Savery married to Hannah GODDARD in Basingstoke on 17 Aug 1742 with a daughter Ann born 1843 at Oliffe Shipton, Glos. My notes say Ann went to live with her Uncle Richard in 1846 but this is another of the early entries in my database with no source details and I have no other evidence of any Richard. The Ann listed with James and Henry in 1851 may be this Ann and Uncle Richard may in fact be Uncle Henry?? -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
