    3. The1841 census does not give birthplaces. It asks the question "Was the person born in this county?", to which the answer is "Yes" or "No". Ages of persons over 15 are rounded down to the nearest five years. For example the age of a 24-year-old is entered as 20. If anyone has access to the 1841 census for Burghclere, Hampshire please can you look up an ancestor of mine called Thomas Challis (aged approx 32 married to Mary) and his family. I need to confirm his birthplace. In the 1851 census he is 42 and his birthplace seems to be hard to read. It has either "Bambury, Wilts?" or "Bampton, Wilts?" (from the HGS index). I have searched the baptism register for Hankerton & Charlton (Bambury Hill Farm, Wilts)and Chiseldon & Liddington (Badbury, Wilts) but found no Challis'. Also his wife Mary's age in the 1851 census seems to be a bit on the low side (30?). I'd be glad if anyone could confirm her age or maiden name. Any information or advice would be appreciated. 1. Re: Savery family
    2. John Lewis
    3. I now have a little more on the Savery family John Savery married Rebecca Emmans at St. Mary, Kingsclere on 28 Oct 1835. Witnesses were Thomas Savery and R??mons Emmans. I really cannot make out what the first name of second witness might be but it 'looks' like what I have typed above. Their daughter Ann Rebecca was born in Kingsclere Dell and baptised at St. Mary on 8 Mar 187. I cannot find a baptism for Rebecca Emmans, I thought she would be a dau of William Immens or Emans and Elizabeth Bunce who married at St. Mary on 17 Oct 1807, but the only children I can find for them are Mary Ann ca 1808, Betsy ca 1811 and William ca 1813. I have checked Kingsclere baptisms to 1825 but no sign of Rebecca so was she born/baptised elsewhere? I cannot find a burial for her in Kingsclere either. Elizabeth Bunce is probably the daughter of Henry and Mary Excell who married at St. Mary on 11 Oct 1776, witnesses Henry Bunce and John Fulker. I have found 6 children for this couple including an Elizabeth bapt. on 25 May 1788. One of the witnesses was a Henry Bunce. Elizabeth had an older brother Henry as well as father Henry so it seems probable it was this Elizabeth who married this William Emmans. I am still a bit uncertain who the parents of the James who married Ann Edwards are. Nor am I certain about their children. I have Joseph born about 1822 and married to Hannah Goddard in 1842, Ann Edwards born about 1823 and married to George Buckeridge in 1848 and Henry born about 1826 at North Oakley (North Oakley Cottages??) according to 1851 census. He married Mary Ann Poole in 1852 and Louisa Butler in 1888. I have Mary Ann buried on 29 Jan 1887 when she was 75 years of age which makes her a lot older than Henry. She would have been 40 when she married Henry to his 26. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

    1. Mail Problems
    2. Barbara Mallyon
    3. Hello All, If you are like me having very little mail, the answer is that maintenance is being carried out for a few days. I hope this explanation will help you to know what is going on, if this message gets through to you. ARCHIVER is having a few operating system problems that are going to require a rebuild of some of the hard disks. To facilitate this process we have turned off the inbound mail to the threaded archives and we are currently getting a fresh backup of the server. After the server is rebuilt we will feed the mail to the archives which may take a day or two to repopulate. That time will depend on the amount of incoming mail now and when we repopulate. I am not sure of the time that this will all take so I have made a wild guess at three days. More information as it comes to hand. 3. Hello All, I see that Agnas Savery later Miller had two illegit. daughters. can anyone tell me when Ada Kate Savery died? I see her date of bap. is 4 July 1880 and my Mother and I talked to her in a house in Swan Street about 1950, when she was sat up in bed as a very stiff and starcy old lady (looked at least 100 yrs.) so could someone see if they have her date of death for me. I am so enjoying getting all the wonderful new information about my Kingsclere relatives. Many thanks, Beryl Shackleton nee Savery shackleton@nethybridge.fsnet.co.uk

    3. Hello All, Can anyone help me to find more information regarding my great grandmother? According to my grandmother's birth certificate, grandma was born 1893 and christened Evelyn Albany. Her mothers name was Susannah Roberts formerly Roberts, her fathers name was Ellis Roberts of The Dell, Kingsclere. He was a Tailor "Journeyman" and the Registrar was John George Ford... I must point out that my grandmother was "farmed out" together with her sisters and brothers at a young age (not legally adopted) she went to live with a family called Faulkner in Chester, and eventually married my grandfather Daniel Roberts... We know nothing of her mother and father and would love to know what happened to them could anybody put me in the right direction, I would willingly pay for somebody to research for me... Regards Graham Roberts syljune@hotmail.com

    1. Re: ALBANY/ROBERTS/FORD
    2. Graham Have you looked at the 1901 census to see if you can find Evelyn or her parents? You might just be in luck and find her living with the parents before she was farmed out elsewhere. The 1901 census is now online. You can view the indexes free of charge but you have to pay to see the full census pages: http://www.census.pro.gov.uk If no one comes up with anything from the local records you could look to see if you can find the marriage on FreeBMD: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com If it's not on there you should be able to find the marriage in the GRO indexes which are now online: http://www.1837online.com You have to pay to view the indexes and you might have your work cut out with a common surname like Roberts and you may have to search through quite a few years, but at least as both surnames were the same you only have one page to search in each quarter instead of two. Happy hunting. Debbie

    1. 1891 Hampshire Census Index
    2. Dear All I've just discovered that the 1891 Hampshire Census Index has now been added to the FFHS online database which should make it much easier to locate our families. Here is the URL: http://www.familyhistoryonline.net You have to pay to view the pages but it only costs 5p per entry so a £5 credit card payment goes a long way. I don't suppose anyone is going to the Hampshire Record Office in the next few weeks who could look up a few of my Tidbury family for me who I've now located in the 1891 census (3 census pages). In return I would be happy to do equivalent look-ups in any of the Berkshire censuses when I go to Reading Library next week (but no big towns such as Newbury please without folio numbers!). Best wishes Debbie

    3. Dear All, I found the following on the Wokingham, Berkshire monumental inscriptions for the Wokingham Free Church Burials: Section C7, Plot 348 Frank HOPKINS born January 1, 1897 Gailey Mill, Kingsclere, died December 23, 1967, Wokingham also his wife Elsie Alice, born September 8, 1899, died January 7, 1970. Section B4, Plot 222 John HOPKINS, born November 12, 1868 Kingsclere, died February 17, 1960, Wokingham , his wife, Emily Ada died February 19, 1947 also their son Herbert Bennett died December 15, 1935. My grandfather Alfred ROLFE born 1876 Kingsclere was friendly with a Mr. HOPKINS who came from Kingsclere and they lived for many years 150 metres from each other in Wokingham. Not sure which of the above is the one my grandfather knew. I also noted in the Wokingham All Saints a number of JEWELL burials which did not indicate whether they were from Kingsclere originally, I know there are some JEWELL's who moved to Wokingham. Sorry for the ramble and hope this is of use. Helen Anderson

    3. I decided to have a look for the marriage of James Savery & Maria Poole in the IGI. I found the marriage at Withington, Glos on 20th Jan 1802. Looking further using Hugh Wallis website I found James probable baptism 31 Mar 1775 (his age on the 1851 census index makes him a born a bit later) Parents were Richard & Elizabeth. Richard & Elizabeth Wilson were married on 20 Feb 1767 and other children were Richard 19 May 1767, John 11 Mar 1769, Mary 30 Nov 1770 and Arabella 28 12 1772 Richard is almost certainly the one bapt. 7 Feb 1734 to James and Arrabella. Only other child listed for these two was Mary bapt. 18 Jan 1731. No record of James or the marriage to Arrabella but there are other Savery entries for Withington. Hope this is of interest if you don't already have these events. I didn't go looking for Maria Poole this time so I'll leave that to the Savery researchers ;-) -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software

    1. Savery's on IGI
    2. Hello John, Yes, I had those but as they came from IGI I hope to verify them and see also if there are other children between the marriage of James Savery & Maria in 1802 and the birth of Richard in 1807. A James appears on various documents, one as a woodman and one as a gamekeeper. I assumed that they were the same person until you made the remark that there were 2 James' This fits with an entry in Richard's diary as having written to brother Jim in 1863. Good, innit? Valerie
