Some of you may remember my earlier request to the list about the problematical Walter Tidbury. It now appears that the Walter Tidbury who married Eliza DRUCE on 17th September 1889 at Lane End, Bucks, was indeed the one who was baptised in Kingsclere in 1862. The father's name on the marriage certificate was given as Frederick Tidbury but this appears to have been a mistake as all the details from the various censuses confirm that Walter was the son of Jeremiah and Martha. According to his birth certificate Walter was born on 24th April 1862 at North Street, Kingsclere. His father was Jeremiah Tidbury, railway labourer, and his mother was Martha TROUGHTON. Martha appears to have been christened on 2nd February 1842 in Kingsclere, the daughter of John Troughton and Minnie ANDREWS who were possibly married on 10th October 1839 in Kingsclere. Martha was possibly one of four sisters, the others being Mary, baptised 9th February 1845, Harriet, baptised 12th October 1850, and Jane, baptised 13th February 1848. Jeremiah Tidbury died some time before the 1881 census and Martha then married Henry RANDALL, a labourer, born about 1836 in Hursley, Hampshire.Walter Tidbury was living with his mother Martha and stepfather Henry Randall in the 1881 census. In 1891 Walter (born Hants) and Eliza were living in Upper North Dean, High Wycombe, with their 10-month-old son, Alfred Tidbury. In 1901 Alfred is living with Martha and Henry Randall and is described as their grandson. I would be most grateful if Barbara or John could have a look at the Kingsclere registers and give me the full details of the TROUGHTON marriage and baptisms as shown above. If anyone has any connections with any of these names do let me know and I will put you in touch with my Tidbury contact. Best wishes Debbie

Barbara I'm sorry but we don't know anything about Martha MAJOR at the moment. The MAJORS my friend has in her tree are as follows. Joseph MAJOR born about 1847 married Mary Ann Rosina TIDBURY on 7th August 1870 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Newbury. Joseph was a gardener living in Greenham at the time of his marriage. Mary Ann and Joseph had four sons, William, Thomas, Joseph and Charles. William was born in Greenham and the other three sons were born in Romford, Essex. Joseph senior died in 1880 or 1881 and Mary Ann remarried to Walter GRUBB who was born about 1861-1863 in Newbury, Berkshire. My friend is descended from the second marriage. Best wishes Debbie

I came across an oddity whilst looking through HUGHES entries in the Kingsclere registers. The 1851 census index for Ecchinswell lists a Charles Hughes age 41 born Thatcham with wife Mary age 40 born Newtown and children William, Elizabeth, Harriet, Stephen and Hannah, all born Ecchinswell When I found the baptism entry for William on 20 Nov 1831 parents were recorded as Charles Watts & Mary Hughes. I decided to see if there was a marriage entry around this time for this couple and found Charles WATTS married Mary WHITE on 15 Aug 1831, both of Ecchinswell. It seems probable these are the parents of William. Charles Watts has become Charles Watts Hughes by November that year!! I suspect Charles may have been illegitimate with parents Watts & Hughes but don't have access to Thatcham registers to check this. My reason for looking at Hughes was an email to me from Peter Goff giving me information he'd received on the Neate family who's burials are recorded in the St. Mary MIs. The link to Hughes being that a John Drake married Jane Hughes in 1800, had a son John who married Ann Bayspole about 1829, who in turn had a daughter Helen who married Stephen Richard Neate. Both Stephen & Helen died in Hong Kong ca 1883/4 according to the MI inscription. Stephens parents were buried at St. Mary, Kingsclere. The Hughes family also link into my earlier email concerning Ada Dry as the wife of David Dry and John Hutchins was baptised Harriet Huse, the only dau of Charles Huse/Hughes & Jane Holness. -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
Among my many other Kingsclere 'problems' is identifying the mother of Ada DRY who married Henry MANCHESTER at St. Paul, Woodlands on 26 Dec 1891. Ada's age is given as 19 years and is recorded as illegitimate in the marriage entry. Witnesses were Ernest & Alice Hutchins An Ada Dry was recorded in the household of John & Harriet Hutchins in 1881, granddaughter, aged 7 years. I can find no baptism for an Ada Dry around the 1874 period. Two children of John & Harriet were Ernest and Alice Hutchins (mentioned above), so it seems likely the Ada who married Henry is the same Ada recorded in h/h of John & Harriet in 1881. If actually born in 1874 she was only 17 rather than 19. Harriet was previously married to David DRY and had one child before he died. This was Ellen born Summershurst and baptised at St. Mary on 6 Sep 1852. The only illegit. birth which seems to fit Ada's date of birth is Ellen Edith baptised at St. Paul on 1 Mar 1874 to Emma DRY of Ram Alley. But I have not found any Emma Dry to match this entry. My hypothesis is that Emma is really Ellen and that Ada is really Ellen Edith. Do any of the other Dry researchers have a view on this or have I missed an essential bit of information? -- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software
