    1. The Kewells of Kingsclere
    2. John Many thanks for all the Kewell baptisms. I shall have to investigate the 1851 censuses to try and unravel a few more of the family relationships. Are you sure that it was William Kewell junior rather than William Kewell senior who was the widower who married Sarah Tidbury? I have a few extra dates for the children of David Tidbury and Phoebe Kewell and one extra child. David Tidbury's age at death on his death certificate was 84 years, but 82 years in the burial record. He was therefore born between about 1783 and 1785 supposedly in Greenham. I have however been unable to locate a baptism for him in Greenham. David and Phoebe had one other child who is not in your list: Jane Tidbury, baptised on 10th October 1824 at St Mary's, Greenham. She is I believe the Jane Tidbury who was buried in Kingsclere on 29th June 1835 aged 11 years. Solomon Tidbury was baptised on 29th July 1827 at St Mary's, Greenham. David Tidbury junior was baptised on 13th December 1829 at St Mary's Greenham. He married Emma and had a number of children but they were all born in Shrubs Hill, Surrey, so you probably don't want to include them as they're 'foreigners'! The Joshua Tidbury who married Mary appears to have married twice. His second wife was Mary Ann, who was born about 1850 in Coombe, Hampshire. She was previously married to William BATT, but I don't know her maiden name. They married in the June quarter of 1890 somewhere in the Kingsclere Registration District. Both Joshua Tidbury and Mary Ann BATT had children from their first marriages. I might get back to you at a later stage about some of the other Kewell descendants. I seem to be suffering from information overload at the moment. I'm trying to focus on the early Thatcham registers to sort out all the (literally) hundreds of Tidburys who were living there. I will keep a look out for Willmotts when I go to the BRO to verify all the Thatcham details I've found on the IGI. Best wishes Debbie

The 1851 Index is very useful but it is with families like this that you wish HGS could have given us the 'as enumerated' as well. I have been struggling to read the names on the 1891 census CDs, Kewell is a hard one with several other possible names to confuse with (like Jewell). 3. Hello Debbie and All, I have an interest in the surname of KERVIL/KEWELL/KEARVEL. My daughter-in-laws father is a KEAVELL, together with a guy called Mike KEARVELL they have done a one name study on the name, this is the information that I sent to Mike. The marriage of Edward HOLLEY and Martha MAJOR 18 May 1873 at Kingsclere, Hampshire, the witnesses were John and Fanny KEIRVELL. Edward is my 1st cousin 5 times removed, could the MAJOR family be related to John and Fanny KEIRVELL ? It all depends on how the Vicar spelt the surname, somewhere they are all related, could they be linked into your family tree. 3. Hi there, I am that person researching the Head family and can offer additional information which may help to spark those little grey cells. Joseph Head b circa 1721 and married to Elizabeth Charzer - Kingsclere with Richard b 21.07.1758 and married to Mary Brown 20.07.1795 Kingsclere. Children - Joseph b 06.01.1796/George b 25.08.1797/Ann b 09.06.1799/James b 21.09.1800 and Henry b 31.08.1806. James is my direct link and married Charlotte Page b 1818 in London where they moved to Croydon. Linkage or corroborative information required on * Marriage Elizabeth Head marriage 20.09.1796 Thomas Pike (could be sister of Richard but no record)? * Is John = Joseph Head as both birth/baptism dates the same? * Richard has variance data indicating marriage to Anne and Mary (Brown) unless they are one and the same as Mary Ann or Ann Mary Brown. * Lucy Head burial date 29.09.1797 at what age - is it sibling of Richard or James? I am researching also Snook (Weymouth Dorset), Stevens (Dorcester) and Branston (Nether Broughton, Leicestershire) on the maternal side. Many thanks Barbara for the exposure. 1. The Kewells of Kingsclere
    2. Further to yesterday's posting Colin has very kindly found a reference to a possible burial for Jane Kewell nee Tidbury wife of William. There is a burial for Jane Kervell on 15th August 1815 age 32 which seems to fit. Colin has also suggested that it might be William Kewell the father rather than William Kewell the son who was the widower who married Sarah Tidbury and I think that he may well be right. If this theory is correct then William Kewell senior would have married his son-in-law's sister (Sarah Tidbury was the sister of the David Tidbury who married William's daughter Phoebe Kewell). Jane Tidbury and Sarah Tidbury are not close relations but are probably cousins by some remove. I now need to check the 1851 Ecchinswell census when I get the chance to visit the Berkshire FHS in the hope that I might be able to untangle all these Kewells. It's all getting very complicated so I hope that all made sense! Best wishes Debbie
