    3. Hello All, For all members of the Hampshire Genealogical Society, a message from the Chairman Len Ruffell. It is with great sadness that we heard that Gordon Brine died in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a short sudden illness. He had been a stalwart member of the office staff from its inception, as well as a great support to his wife, Sheila our Secretary. Len Ruffell has sent a message of condolence on behalf of the Society. Sheila Brine has a broken arm, to add to the sad loss of her husband Gordon. Regards Barbara Lewis Mallyon Basingstoke, Hants. 3. Good morning I would like to thank John Lewis for his kind answer re the Bates/Smiths. I'm really grasping at straws here, but I think I'm on the right track, I have a marriage at Hamstead Marshall Berkshire in 1796 of a Rose Green to George Matthews a Sophia Bates was a witness. There is no other Sophia Bates that we can find that might fit. Also the name Sophia has been used constantly in our Family since this time.It would help if Mary Green had a sister or relative called Rose we have no proof of who Rose Green was.So if we could find baptisims for Mary and Rose it would be great also for the James Bates. We have also a John Bates marrying a Betty Matthews at Hamstead Marshall in 1793 , on the IGI if one puts in the parents James Bates and Mary Green one gets quite a list of offspring and there is a John b 1767 which would fit . Once again thankyou. I really appreciate it. Regards Beverley Smith

If any > one has any of these names I would love to know. thankyou Beverley > Smith ---------------------------------------- I have the mother as Mary Gallant married 14 Feb 1755 at St. Mary Kingsclere. Marriage register entry no 9. Both were of Kingsclere Parish married by Licence by George Bell. Witnesses: Joseph Bate and John Humphreys All parties signed the register. Witness 'Joseph' may be wrong as the fiche is indistinct in parts. I don't have parents for this James However there was another marriage of a James Bates on 28 July 1766 where the wife was Mary Green. James was recorded as a bachelor so not a second marriage. Mary was a minor married with consent of her Father. Witnesses were John (unreadable) and Eliz Everard Again all parties signed the register. I have his parents as James Bates & Mary Hack . It is quite possible Sophia was a daughter of James & Mary Green but I'll have to check baptism dates and see if there is anything to link her to one or other (occupation of abode) but there may be nothing. As for Sophia's marriage: St. Mary Kingsclere, Marriage Register entry 362 Joseph Smith of the parish of Stone in the County of Bucks and Sophia Bates of this Parish were married in this Church by Licence. this 26th day of August in the year One Thousand eight Hundred and two by me John Hewer Curate This marriage was solemnized between Us { Joseph Smith Sophia Bates. In the Presence of Charles Bates Hannah Bagen All signed the register, I'm not sure of the surname of second witness -- John Lewis Debian Linux with Geneweb genealogy application

I checked the marriage entry and the only things that give a clue as to which John this could be is that his surname is written MYALL and a witness was Benjamin MYALL. The only Miles family with a John & Benjamin is that of Richard Miall/Miles & Jane Stevens. This family also has an Ann Myal/Miles who is I think the one who married (1) Jesse Spratley on 7 Nov 1770 (2) William Piper on 29 Sep 1779. Witnesses at the first marriage were Benjamin Myal and John Fulker and at the second John Miel and Ricd Rode I haven't found a burial for Jesse Spratley, who was of Mortimer when he married, so cannot be sure that it was his widow who married William Piper. That marriage entry has nothing to say about the status of either party but given a witness was John Miel she could have been a Miles. At least two of the children of William & Ann (Miles) Piper, William 1756-1830 & James 1789-1865, moved to Tunworth and had numerous children there. > John LEWIS please help - There is also another John MILES married > to Ann PIPER 20 Sep 1780 St. Mary's Kingsclere by Licence, this > needs to be sorted out which John MILES. Joseph MILES had 3 or even > 4 sons named John, problem is when they died the burial just says > John MILES. I have this marriage in the fiche viewer and it relates to the marriage of JOSEPH Miles & Martha Bridgeman. I don't have a suitable Ann Piper in the database in any case, but there were Pipers in East Woodhay and Burghclere so she could have come from outside the Parish of Kingsclere. -- John Lewis Debian Linux with Geneweb genealogy application
