    1. [King] TANNER name.
    2. sonia brakowski
    3. I am researching the TANNER family in Hampshire. Just spent a wonderful 2 days in their family history facility, met some wonderful people and still trying to fill in all the information I was able to gather while visiting home from the States, where I have lived for the past 40 years. My TANNERS originated in Colmer, Upway, Froxfield, but an illegitimate child of Lucy Tanner and William Thorpe led me to Hampshire, where the Thorpe family was living. My research stops with LUCY as I can't seem to find any more information on her as to her baptism (1770's) or her death. I know she eventually married John Bone but even that has proved elusive. As to her child with William Thorpe, he kept the name of Tanner and stayed in the area along with a bunch of his children. Before I bore you to death completely, I will wait to hear back from you if this rings any bells with your Tanner research. My father was Samuel Thomas Tanner, born 1904 in St Marylebone, son of Mary Ann Amelia Whittle and Harry Tanner. Thanks in advance for reading this. Sonia Brakowski (nee Tanner) New Jersey USA

As you probably know I have a Stephen Smith who married Frances Crate Wickens at Burghclere in 1801. I have just looked at the Burghclere BTs and the first Smith entry is that of Phoebe bapt 23 Jul 1780 to Joseph & Mary. Co-incidence or wishful thinking? Joseph & Mary continued having children to 1789 with the last entry having surname Smyth. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

A Joseph & Mary had 2 Josephs, bapt 26 Oct 1766 and 21 Jun 1767,their first child (possibly) Ambrose in May 1758. As usual it isn't that simple as there is a bapt of Edward to Joseph & Mary (Munday) in 1770 who could be parents of one of those Josephs. There was a Joseph with wife Elizabeth (of Sidmonton) having children from 1769-1784. going back further Joseph bapt 1748 to Thomas & Mary Foster alias Smith is one of my ancestors and there was a Joseph son of Widow Smith bapt in Jul 1740. The first Joseph I listed was the one bapt 9 Apr 1727 to Thomas & Martha. There is no sign of a Smith with first name Stephen at all. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

I think this is going to be the only way to resolve the Smith problem. I copied several sheets (11 and a bit in fact) of A4 paper with Smith baptisms from the early indexed transcriptions of the Kingsclere registers when I was trying to find the ancestors of my 'Smith alias Foster' lot. I still have them and will try scanning them if anyone wants a copy, they are written in pencil in my terrible handwriting so may not end up very legible -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

To help Dorothy find the marriage details the Hants Marr Index has them married at Hannington on 23 Nov 1819. There is no baptism for a Mary Ann Drewett or Drewitt in Hants Bap Index although there were several Drewett families having children in Hannington around that time:- Charles Drewett married Martha Woodhouse 24 Dec 1828 so too late to be parents of Mary Ann also John & Mary who had at least 6 children in Hannington but not listed in Hants Marr Index and John & Jane (error for Mary maybe as no marriage in the index) with two children and a couple of baseborn children. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

    2. Nigel Gerdes
    3. Hi all, A new link. I am slowly seeking to sort out all the SMITHs in the Kingsclere area. More a journey of hope than arrival. John L's website has the parents of Dorcas Smith b 1858 as just John b 1824 and Elizabeth b 1825. Dorcas married George Bridgeman in 1881. After a stoke of luck with the 1841 census yielding only one recorded John Smith of the right age in the area and the other John Smith marriages on FreeBMD in the 1841 to 1851 window accounted for, it looks like the parents of Dorcas are John Smith born 1823 to James Smith and Sarah, and Elizabeth Simpson born 1824 to Joseph and Charlotte Simpson nee Smith. These are two seperate Smith lines for grandmother Charlotte and father John. John and Elizabeth married in 1847. Dorcas has great grandparents, Issac and Dinah Simpson nee Tull, and Joseph and Mary Smith nee Taylor. Even better - Dorcas had an uncle Henry Simpson who married a Dorcas Simpson b 1808 at Pamber, so its a fair guess who she was named after since both her sisters shared the same name as an aunt or grandmother on the paternal Smith side. Thanks to John for the information to be able to tackle the unresolved link. Regards, Nigel Gerdes

    3. Hi, I am working on the DREWETT family of Hannington. Copyhold details have enabled me to get well back before the existing PR's to the mid-17th century with the barest of details but no guesses. The family were the 'squires' at one stage but had their lands reclaimed and thereafter lived in reduced circumstances. I don''t have the parents of Mary Ann Drewett born ca 1825 Hannington died 1894 Hannington who married William DENNIS 14 May 1847 at Hannington. Willam's parents were Thomas and Harriett Dennis nee Digweed. Witnesses and parents would help to be able to link her to possible siblings. Can anybody do the marriage lookup please? 1. [King] Samuel SMART and Hannah EATWELL nee BATES
    2. I've been trying to catch up with the archives since returning from holiday in Corsica at the weekend and I've noticed that there's been a flurry of activity regarding the BATES of Kingsclere. I have a passing interest in one of these BATES families via a connection with my Kintbury SMARTS and can add some further information. Hannah BATES, the daughter of John BATES and Hannah LEY, was baptised on 17th January 1808 in Inkpen (IGI). Hannah married Thomas EATWELL in the December quarter of 1844 in the Hungerford Registration District. Thomas did not live up to his name and he died some time before 1848. I can't find a burial in the Berkshire Burial Index though Free BMD has two possible deaths in the Hungerford Registration District at the right time. After Thomas's death Hannah married Samuel SMART on 10th February 1848 in Kintbury. Beverley kindly gave me the details of the marriage from one of her Kintbury print-outs. Samuel SMART was a widower and Hannah EATWELL was a widow at the time of the marriage. They were both of full age. Samuel's father was David SMART, a labourer. Hannah's father was John BATES, a labourer. The witnesses were Harriet TRESON or FRESON and Edward PIKE. Samuel SMART was buried on 11th April 1870 in Kintbury aged 78 years. Hannah SMART nee BATES was buried on 19th December 1882 in Kintbury aged 74 years. I have no record of any children from either marriage. Hannah's father, John BATES, was born c. 1772. He claims to have been born in Kintbury but there is no record of his baptism in the Kintbury registers. I suspect he was born in Hampshire and is somehow connected to the Kingsclere BATES. Samuel SMART was the son of David SMART and Elizabeth WILD who married on 20th February 1791 in Inkpen. Samuel's first wife was Harriet COOK. Samuel and Harriet married on 26th January 1813 in Kintbury. Neither of them signed the register. The witnesses were James PALMER and Michael CURTIS. I've only found one child from this marriage: Thomas Smart, born c. 1821 somewhere in Berkshire, probably in Kintbury. Harriet SMART was buried on 1st January 1847 in Kintbury aged 67 years, so she appears to have been some 11 years younger than her husband. I believe Samuel SMART was the brother of my gggg grandfather Benjamin SMART. I've not yet found Benjamin's baptism. He claims to have been born in Hungerford some time between 1792 and 1795 but there is no record of his baptism in the Hungerford or Inkpen PRs. Benjamin participated in the machine breakers' riots in Kintbury in 1830. He was arrested but was not committed for trial and was subsequently discharged. Benjamin married Susanna FAITHFULL (sister of the Thomas FAITHFULL who emigrated to Australia and was shipwrecked off the English Channel). Benjamin and Susanna's daughter Caroline SMART married George JOHNSON in 1851 in Kintbury. Their daughter Sarah Anne JOHNSON (b. 1856 Kintbury) married George Napoleon Frederick William TIDBURY (b. 1856 in Sydmonton) in 1881 in Forton, Hampshire. They are my great great grandparents. 2. David Griffiths Sox
    3. Did any Bates from this family migrate to the United States, particularly Oregon or California? I found much inter-marriage between the three (at least) Kingsclere families in my Whitfield ancestors, including Prismalls and Windiates. We have a Philip Bates that married my great-grandmother Mary Anne Whitfield Griffiths' grand-daughter, Jane Larooka Marshall, in about 1896 in Portland, Oregon. The marriage lasted only about a year, and included one son, initially named Marshall Westfield Bates. Philip Bates died in 1923. David Griffiths Sox Fairfield, California, USA
