Looking at FreeBMD I have found a birth in the June quarter of 1841 in the Kingslere RD for Ann BRAIDMAN. Has anyone come across a baptism for this Ann as I am wondering who her parents were and if this is the correct spelling of her name - or could it be BREADMAN? -- Margaret Young [email protected] Breadmore One-Name Study (GOONS 2503) http://www.breadmore.org/
Hi Folks, Greetings from Toronto, Canada. I am seeking to contact and exchange family history notes with any descendant or researcher of the family of my cousin, Henry James HULL (1850 - 1905), a farmer in East Woodhay, Hants. Henry James HULL, son of Henry and Sarah HULL, yeoman of East Woodhay, Hants, was baptized there 1850. In 1894, he married his cousin, Mary LAWRENCE, in Inkpen, Berks (BMD ref: Hungerford 2c / 597); Mary was born in Inpken about 1866, baptized there 1866 (I.G.I.), the eldest daughter of Richard LAWRENCE, farmer of Inkpen Manor Farm. In the 1901 census for "The Yews" in East Woodhay, Henry James 50, was living on his own means, with his wife Mary 34, and with their children: Marion 4 and Henry 1. Henry died in Workingham 1905; Mary died in Newtown, Berks, 1929. Henry and Mary had issue: a. Marion HULL, daughter of Henry and Mary HULL, born in East Woodhay, Hants, 1897, birth registered in Kingsclere in Q2 of 1897 (BMD ref: 2c / 227). In Q2 of 1919, in Newbury district (BMD ref: 2c / 818), Marion was married to Frederick Spencer Howard MARLE, a vicar in the Church of England; Fred was born in Okehampton 1887 and died in Deane, Hants, 1968. Marion died in 1989 in Whitchurch, Dorset; Fred and Marion had issue, still living: b. Henry Lawrence HULL, son of Henry and Mary HULL, born in East Woodhay, Hants, 1900, birth registered in Kingsclere in Q2 of 1900 (BMD ref: 2c / 235). Henry was a banker. He married Angelina PONTING about 1934; Henry died 1982 and was cremated in Whiteparish, Wilts; Angelina died 1983; Henry and Angelina had issue, one male and one female, still living. Best wishes. GIRDLER is a name strongly established in the Kingsclere area. My own Smith family have links. A copy of Australian Convict Index 1788-1868 GIrdler names from the Ancestry.com site in case anybody is searching for them. 1) Henry Girdler c 1751, Year 1790, Trial Reading, Berks, State NSW, Ship Neptune. IGI has a baptism to Henry and Ann G 25 Jun 1751 St Mary Reading. 2) George Girdler c 1839 Year 1863 Trial Winchester, Hants, State WA, Status U, Ship Racehorse, Comments To London 5.1.1878, Occupation Labourer IGI has a baptism 02 Aug 1840 to George and Elizabeth G at All Saints, Crondall, Hants. The family is in the 1851 census. So I don't think either of them were Kingsclere born but might be part of the wider GIrdler tree for a Kingsclere Gi(u)rdler researcher. Regards, Nigel Gerdes

Further checking found this entry on FreeBMD: Marriages Mar 1856: ROLFE Charles & ? ?, Whitchurch 6a 269 and the IGI gave me: SELINA WEBB, Female, Father: SAMUEL WEBB, Spouse: CHARLES ROLFE Marriage: 24 JAN 1856 Whitchurch, Hampshire, England Husband Age at Marriage: 28, Wife Age at Marriage: 21 Hants Bap index confirmed Selina was baptised on 21 Jun 1835 to Samuel & Mary Ann Webb IGI again gave me: SAMUEL WEBB & MARY ANN GLASS, Marriage: 23 JUL 1827 Saint Giles, Reading, Berks with the 1851 Census giving Samuel a birth place of Laverstoke and Mary Ann in Reading. and BTs for Laverstoke gave me James & Elizabeth Webb baptising: James ca 1780 Charles ca 1782 Harrey ca 1785 Harriet ca 1789 George ca 1790 John ca 1791 Sarah ca 1791 Phebe ca 1793 Robert ca 1797 William 1799 Samuel ca 1806 (22 Dec 1806) finally a member submitted IGI entry gave me: James Webb & Elizabeth Gilbert, Marriage: 05 APR 1779, Of Frefolk, , Hampshire so looks like yet another Webb family to add to the Kingsclere/Tadley ones. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package
I know the subject is wrong as this email refers to Charles & Mary Ann but I think I have sorted him out 1861 Census: Elliot Row, Islington: Charles Rolfe, head. 27, fruiterer & greengrocer, Kingsclere Mary A, wife, 28, , City of London Elizabeth, dau, 2, , Islington Emily, dau, 7 mths, , Islington Henry Rolfe, brother, 14, servant (porter), Kingsclere Marriages Dec 1857: Grabham Mary Ann Bell & Rolfe Charles, Islington 1b 288 The only Charles with a brother Henry is the one born about Oct 1831 to Samuel & Hannah Fisher and his half-brother Henry was born to Samuel and his second wife Sarah Thorn about Feb 1847. Henry later married a Lucy Thorn from Kintbury. I don't know if she was relationed to Henry's mother who came from Welford. But as Dennis mentioned to me in a direct email there was yet another Charles born in 1833/4 to John Rolfe & Mary Farmer. Is he the 31 year old shoemaker born Kingsclere living in St. Mary Bourne in 1861 with wife Selina age 26 and children Joseph age 3 & James age1, all born St. Mary Bourne ??? (more children given in 1871 Census) FreeBMD doesn't seem to have the marriage and there is no IGI batch for St. Mary Bourne to let me search for any Selinas. None of the ages given in the various Censuses match birth dates of these Charles very closely and I thought this Charles was going to turn out to be the Charles I have referred to above but having a brother Henry made me think again. -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

Marriages Jun 1886: Guyett Henry & Rolfe Mary Ann, Uxbridge 3a 31 Elizabeth (North) died in 1876 Deaths Jun 1876: Rolfe Elizabeth 46, Uxbridge 3a 11 presumably following the birth of John Births Jun 1876: Rolfe John, Uxbridge 3a 24 FreeBMD has this: Deaths Mar 1913: Rolfe Charles 81, Uxbridge 3a 42 but the age given is wrong for a Charles born in 1834 The marriage entry for Charles to Elizabeth North has his father as Samuel -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi list, Recent list mail points out the 'lows' on FH research. Last week a day at the London archives turned up nothing. It is not fun searching for a parish record in Whitchapel between 1840 and 1850. There must have been a queue for baptisms every day, such was the population density in each parish. I tried deep breathing to avoid the stress. The tube was vile on the return trip. However there are 'highs' as well. On a roll - at the HRO today, a day trip has produced a lot of new data to sort out. As a starter, anybody with a BROWN and GRIGG interest please get in touch as an Overton will has shown a family link between the Browns, yeomen of Polehampton and Samuel Grigg, shopkeeper of Newbury ca 1785. Another one at Ellisfield: Johannes SMITH of Woolverton and Elizabeth OLIVER of Kingsleer (sic) married 1 Oct 1685. And for Bates researchers: Joseph baptised 16 Oct 1768 at Overton to Joseph and Mary BATES - Warrener And for Wheeler researchers: Three of the four sons of Richard WHEELER of Kingsclere became barge (as in canal) builders in various parts of the country. A large number of WHEELER at Bramley. A possible solution for the surname of the wife Elizabeth of John FRY (Brewer in London) born Bramley, She is from Kingsclere despite the 1851 saying Wotton! She has to be Elizabeth OWEN because his nephew Charles OWEN is staying with them in the 1851 census. Many early 18th century PORTSMOUTH family members found in Pamber and a GIRDLER family at Elvetham in the late 18th century. Anybody with links to WATERIDGE aka WATRIDGE? Hello Mike & List Thank you Mike for putting a Spanner into the works!!! SCREAM! Have just looked through the whole of the HILLINGDON Census for 1861 [57 pages] and I did not find another Louisa beyond the one I had found. There are ROLF names i.e. a Mary [U/m], Jasper & family [Page 45], Thomas born Henley, Oxon [Page 49], Benjamin [16] & George [12] both born Hillingdon but not at home [Page 52] but no other Charles & Elizabeth & dau Louisa. So who the Louisa is that you found the entry for is a mystery and the only thing I can think is, that Charles & Elizabeth re-registered their daughter - the question is, do I spend out another £7 to find out. I have also been through the G.R.O. Death Indexes from Oct 1854 to Dec 1861 and except for a Louisa Dec Q 1860 Shoreditch 1c 136 there is no Louisa registered at Uxbridge. Mike - don't you dare find one. Thanks for your interest - Family History is sooooo smoothing. Regards, Denis
Hello Denis & List You said: "I cannot find a Louisa ROLFE born UXBRIDGE [Yiewsley Reg. Dist.] on the G.R.O. Indexes between 1851/1853". I have found the birth of a Louisa ROLF registered July-September quarter 1854, Uxbridge Registration District, Vol 3a, Page 12. Hope this helps.
