The birth certificate for John William Collins has mother as Jane Collins (formerly Miles) A search for Jane Miles on FreeBMD didn't find anything in Kingsclere around the expected period. The most likely Jane Miles is the one bapt 13 Oct 1833 at St. Lawrence (from St. Mary register) to Isaac Miles & Hannah Andrews , but without the marriage certificate cannot prove it. Isaac was publican (and farmer) of the Rising Sun, Ecchinswell for many years. He was not a member of a Kingsclere Miles family but was born in the Speen area. If anyone is interested in this Collins family and would like the birth certificate for John William I'll pass it on. I haven't been able to trace John beyond 1871 when he was in parents household in Hexton, Herts, where his father was a gamekeeper. The same applies to youngest sister Sarah Ann. Kate Collins I traced as far as 1891 when she was living in Marylebone 1891 Census, St. Helena Home, Grove End Road, Marylebone: Kate Collins, assistant, 31, home sister, Kingsclere Kate had trained at Cheltenham General Hospital and she was recorded there in 1881 as an assistant hospital nurse. Father William Collins moved on from being a gamekeeper to becoming Foreman of Spratt's Dog Sanatorium, Battersea in 1891 and later 1901 Census, Bridge Road, Battersea: William Collins, head, 70, vet, canine specialist, Ecchinswell Jane, wife, 67, , Ecchinswell -- John Lewis Debian (Sid) with the GeneWeb genealogy package

    3. Thanks Barbara & Greg for your input. I have the marriage cert. for Thomas Hunt & Ellen Mason 14th Nov.1895( father Richard Mason, witnesses William & Emily Mason) which ties her in with Richard Mason & Harriet Stout family. Ellen is with the family in 1881 but I can only find Ellen STOUT in 1891 a servant in East Grafton which I think might be her. I have what I think is her birth cert.22nd. Oct. 1873, mother Harriet Stout, no father, res. Shalbourn, registered in Kintbury, Hungerford. Hence the hope of a bastardy bond to identify the father, or some clue in a baptismal record to trace her fathers side. If you have any advice on where else to look I would be very grateful, once again many thanks Geoff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gregory Ross" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 10:38 PM Subject: Re: [King] Ellen Stout > Hi Geoff > I hope I'm not being presumptious as you may have the info already. > Ellen is on the freeBMd and you could order the certificate from the > General Register Office on line The info is > Dec 1873 Hungerford 2c 236 > I also checked the 1871 census for Harriet. 2. MICHAEL BAYLISS
    3. Listers researching the MAY name at Ashford Hill might be interested in the following entry from the 1891 census for Egham, Surrey (RG12/1009, sheet 49). Living at Egham Hythe are the following: William MAY: Head: 22: Stoker & Engine Driver: Hampshire, Ashford Hill Hannah MAY: Wife: 34: Middlesex, Staines Maria MAY: Daur: 14: Middlesex, Staines William MAY: Son: 12: Errand Boy: Surrey, Egham Hythe Bessie MAY: Daur: 7: Scholar: Middlesex, Staines Nellie MAY: Daur: 5: Scholar: Middlesex, Staines Harry MAY: Son: 2: Middlesex, Staines Samuel MAY: Nephew: 20: Laborer: Hants, Kingsclere I have done the best I can to make sense of the stated ages. The enumerator has clearly made rather a mess of this and there are numerous corrections! Also, I cannot trace a Samuel MAY born at Kingsclere circa 1871 although there was one circa 1877 (but I don't think he had an uncle William). 1. [King] Hannah & Stephen MILES, Ashford Hill
    2. MICHAEL BAYLISS
    3. This is for any Listers researching the MILES & MAY names at Ashford Hill, and possibly for John LEWIS. I should be interested to know whether anyone might be able to confirm, or disprove, the hypothesis below. I have been trying for some time to discover the identity of the Hannah who married Stephen MILES, son of Benjamin MILES & Mary BIRD and brother of my 2x great-grandmother Elizabeth. They were married at unknown date and place, probably just before 1830, and presumably at Kingsclere. The only direct evidence comes from the baptisms of four children where Stephen MILES & Hannah are shown as the parents: these are Ann (baptised 1830), Daniel (1832), Hannah (1836) & Benjamin (1838); all the baptisms were at St Mary, Kingsclere. Census evidence in 1841 indicates that the family lived at Ashford Hill (as did the other MILES family members) but Stephen evidently died before then as Hannah is shown in the 1841 census as a widow. I believe the key to Hannah’s identity lies in the 1851 census, which records an Ann MILES (20) and a Hannah MILES (15), both born at Kingsclere, living at Ashford Hill with their grandfather Charles MAY, a widowed carpenter aged 74 born at Brimpton. From the birthdate and description, this must be the Charles MAY born circa 1776 who married Ann MARINER. Charles & Ann had a daughter Hannah MAY baptised on 16 October 1803 at St Mary, Kinsgclere. If, as seems highly probable, the Ann and Hannah of the 1851 census are the daughters of Stephen & Hannah MILES, and the Charles MAY in question is who I believe he was, then it looks like the latter Hannah must have been his daughter. An addtional clue is that Sarah Ann BRADLEY, a niece of Stephen MILES, married Daniel MAY, son of Charles & Ann MAY above. In the 1871 census, this Daniel has in household at Humber’s Marsh a ‘nephew’, Daniel MILLES [sic] aged 39 and born at Kingsclere Woodlands. I infer that this must be Daniel the son of Stephen and Hannah MILES, which then makes Daniel MAY Hannah's brother and reinforces the hypothesis as to her identity. QED, I think. Do others agree?
