I have a service number that reads C/MX 73916. Would this be a Chatham Marine and, if so, how would I go about finding the service records please? Thanks, Shay
Hi Shay, You are right on! C does signify a Chatham marine or rating. The other RN depots were Portsmouth, Devonport and Lee-on-Solent (Fleet Air Arm). At one time Fleet Air Arm numbers were prefixed with FAA, up until about 1945 I think. I joined up in 1944 and originally had a prefix of FAA, then it changed to 'L', before I was demobed in 1946.
