Hi Listers, I'm trying to find the wife of John ARSTELL, he is on vessel Portsmouth 1861census, and Royal Marine Hospital Chatham Kent on 1871 he died 1874. His marriage cert. states his address as Royal Marine Barracks, would there be a married quarters there? He is down as being married on both census, his death cert. states he died in hospital and does not give an info on family. Would be very grateful for any help. Regards Jean

Hello Jean There were two barracks at that time. The RM Artillery were at Southsea whereas the RM Light Infantry were at Forton Barracks, Gosport. There were married quarters but also many of the local houses were occupied by Marine families. There was a school within the Forton barracks for the children of Marines. You do not state John's wife's name or where they were married. Some wives stayed in their home towns whilst the men served away. By the way, John is not on the ship Portsmouth - but in the ships company in Portsmouth - HMS Victory Marine service records can be found at The National Archive, Kew Hope this helps Linda & Tony -----Original Message----- From: jean flanagan [mailto:jeancflanagan@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 08 October 2005 19:09 To: ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-HANTS] Where is marines wife Hi Listers, I'm trying to find the wife of John ARSTELL, he is on vessel Portsmouth 1861census, and Royal Marine Hospital Chatham Kent on 1871 he died 1874.
