    3. Bob - reply to your message of 10/2 i've been away - - re: William Ramsay Searle - IGI says he was christened 04 JUN 1824, St. Mary's, Portsea, s/o Richard Searle and Sophia; I have no bd or bpl IGI says he married 9 June 1845 St. Michael's, Barbados, Jane Abel Leacock (family said he mar. Jane or "JA"/so agreement there). Fam. story says 2 children, Sophie, unmar., & Theodore or Wm. Theodore; that Wm. Ramsay was a Colonel (and, not yet aware his son had left home, lied about his age,& changed his name,) inspected the troop not recognizing his son; this would have been between 1866 and 1876 as son married in Halifax in 1876 under name of Staples. Only other family info on Wm. Ramsay is that he and Jane divorced, that's one reason I had hoped to find Jane and kids with him in 1871 to pin down date/time of separation. (incidently, have found Jane on serveral census' listing herself as a widow!). 'guess I need to break down and pay to get a copy of her death records listed on free bmd as June quarter 1901 in Brighton. No, I haven't located Wm. Ramsay Searle on any other census - think perhaps in 1861 index but haven't been bold enough to ask SKS to check it for me. [Wm. R. Searle, birth 1823, location of birth Hampshire; res. 1861, Hampshire]. Family passed down no age at death, death date, place or burial info. or what unit he was supposedly a Colonel in. The "Ramsay" got passed down several generations so may be a clue; and note he himself went by "William Ramsay" not just William - christening, marriage, and christening of daughter all refer to him as William Ramsay Searle. as for daughter Sophia Jane, found her christening on IGI - Sept. 11, 1846, also at St Mary's Portsea (same as her dad) so will probably let her rest for a bit & chase her Dad. Wm. Ramsay's wife Jane Abel Searle --- I cannot find her in index of 1871 census; think I have her on index of 1861 census [jane searle, b 1826 loc barbados, ccivil location; res. 1861, Hampshire] but haven't asked anyone to look up the details. 1881 census she's a boarder, widow age 50, ? London I think --------- 1891 she's 57 , widow, born in Barbados, living at 21 Richmond road, Paddington, & 13 yr. old grandson willie with her - 1901 she's, according to index, in Brighton, and BMD lists her death in June quarter 1901 in Brighton. Family had said she lived in London and brighton beach in later years! And son Theodore - well, I'm working on him.........................................Nancy ----- Original Message ----- From: <bob.newell@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 02, 2005 7:34 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-HANTS] 1871 census > > can you give me any other details of this family birth dates of children > and wife. have you found him them in any other census > > bob > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "john wakefield" <nlwake@adelphia.net> > To: <ENG-HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, October 03, 2005 12:27 AM > Subject: Re: [ENG-HANTS] 1871 census > > >> Bob - can you read what it says under occupation? >> thanks.
